Who: Ares and Hera
What: Lunch
Where: Nice little lunchroom - Downtown Miami
When: Backdated - Thursday December 4th, 2008
Warnings: None
Ares had made the promised reservation for the lunch with his mother. The fact that he was known as a rich horse breeder was pretty helpful, it got him one of the best tables in most restaurants. "Carmichael" he said as the cute little mortal girl asked under which name the reservation was made.
He gave her a half smile as she looked at him with a slight blush. "It says that the reservation is for two." She looked around him to see if someone was entering. "I am a bit early." He moved into her line of sight, "but I am sure you can take me to the reserved table, my sweet." He purred the last two words making the girl blush even more. He wasn't subtle in anything, so his flirting wasn't subtle either, but it usually worked. "Of course I can." She started to lead him toward the table right away, giving War time to openly ogle her behind.
His mother on the other hand was perfectly on time. She stepped into the doors of the restaurant and glanced about almost idly to see if her son had arrived yet. Seeing him, she arched an eyebrow just slightly, and began to walk in his direction before the girl at the front could even ask. Clearly she was a woman on a mission, and while she may have appeared older than that of her son, she by no means looked old. Part of her classic feel though almost felt as though he should be pulling gloves off her hands as she approached. Perhaps another time.
"I see that you were able to arrive early. I do not believe that I have eaten here before," she said in greeting once she was close enough. Reaching the table, she smiled. "How are you, Ian?"
"For you anything." Ares got up and smiled at his mother, he took her hand and kissed her knuckles. He gave her a small smile before releasing her hand and moving to pull out her chair for her. "I am doing really well, June, how are you doing?" A good son would probably also have asked about Daddy but he didn't, he really didn't care about it.
Nor, really, did his mother expect him too. She wouldn't bother to consider the possibilities that would bring the question about. She took the offered seat and settled herself into it, moving with the ease of one accustomed to the treatment. "As well as I could be expected. I look forward to a pleasant lunch," with my son. She did not speak the words aloud, but let them rest lightly in the air between them.
Ares moved back to his own seat, he made himself comfortable in it while giving his mother one of his real smiles. Not many who knew Ian or Ares would believe he was capable of real smiles but he was. "A pleasant lunch it will be, this not a bad lunch room." It wasn't what they were used to on mount Olympus but nothing really was in the modern times.
At that moment one of the waitresses hurried over with the menus. "Can I bring you something to drink while you decide?" She offered after telling them her name and that she was going to be their waitress for today. She had smiled at the lady before looking at the handsome and rich horse breeder. Yes, he had been there before and had flirted with every pretty mortal that worked there on his earlier visits. Today he was on his best behaviour though, he was here with his mother after all.
"I'll have some black coffee." He said with a tiny flirtatious smile before looking over to his 'date'. "June?"
"Tea, please," she answered, giving the girl a polite smile of her own before reaching for the menu to start to look it over. She was curious about the variety of food they would offer. She waited for the girl to walk away before resuming the conversation. "Tell me, what have you been keeping yourself busy with lately?"
"I have been training my new assistant." Ares grinned, it was the truth in a way, Amanda was his assistant, true she was his priestess/warrior too but this was not really the place to talk about things like that. Teaching her how to bathe him after a battle had been satisfying in more then one way. "And of course I have been running my stables."
He glanced over the menu and decided he wanted seafood today. "Have you been doing anything interesting?" He put away the menu as he decided on salmon.
"Nothing of great note. Mostly work and keeping my husband in line," she commented, thinking to herself that in some ways they seemed the same thing. Chicken sounded good, the question was in what form. Pasta? Salad? Breaded? She considered the choices before her. "A number of months ago, my brother pointed out to me a flaw in my security system at work however. I did not think of it until now, but perhaps you are familiar with some of the local security groups?"
"I think I can help you with that, do you want protection or an electronic device?" Ares was more for the muscular approach, strong warriors were no match for any fancy devices in his opinion. He was able to get either for his mother of course.
Their waitress returned at that moment and with a charming little smirk he ordered a seafood pasta dish, he was sure it would be good even though he didn't even bother to remember the name of it longer then necessary. The waitress then turned to Hera, "Do you want to order too?" She spoke politely trying not stammer and blush too much.
Hera cast her son a look over the top of the menu as if to say, 'Really son...' with an edge of disapproval. Blood lust and sexual lust may not have a vast difference to him but the least he could do would be keep it to private and proper settings. She returned her eyes to the page and made a choice, handing the menu back. Hopefully they would bring the tea and coffee soon as well. "The chicken and mushrooms, over rice."
Ares could not help himself, he had to check out the pretty potential one night stands, but he really was on his best behaviour and trying to be not too obvious. He should have known his mother would see it though and answered her look with a apologetic one of his own. It might not be healthy too say it too his face but when all was said and done Ares was a mommy's boy.
The waitress moved quickly through the restaurant to get their drinks and to make sure their orders were being worked on. She returned before Ares could start talking about the subject of security for Hera. With polite little nod she put the tea and coffee on the table giving Ares a shy smile before going off to help the other customers.
"What is actually wrong with your security system, [mother]." He sat back in the chair watching the woman at the other side of the table, nobody would ever guess she was his mother or even related to him.
"My brother a few months ago was able to slip into my office without the security system going off. I believe it was one where is a door is opened, then closed quickly enough, the alarm does not recognize it." She poured the water from the tea pot into the mug as she spoke, seeing that her tea bag was properly allowed to soak. "I have no doubt that he learned a few tricks from his nephew, or that he merely enjoys his ability to sneak about, but the point that it is an issue I should see tended to remains." Hera lifted her eyes to her son, curious what he might choose to answer to the minor challenge. How well did he know security, hmm?
When it came to security Ares was the old-fashioned 'guard at the door'-type. If anyone was ever stupid enough to break into his place he would of course deal with that person in his own wargod way. "I am not up to date on all the electronic security systems, I think that is more Dante's thing." He made sure to use his uncle's mortal name. "But I could recommend some good security guards." He drank his coffee before adding, "I could test your security if you want." He thought trying to break into Hera's office did strike him as funny.
As though her office would survive such a literal 'breaking and entering' attempt. "My office is not big enough to require a security guard of it's own, though if you knew a guard dog that could spend his nights there, I would be open to the consideration." That would be a long time to leave the dog alone, but she was sure arrangements could be made. "I will speak with Dante however, and see what he would recommend. He may waste his money at times, but normally it is with good cause." And it would serve him right for breaking into her office in the first place. She did enjoy that idea.
"Finding a good dog should not be a problem." Ares started thinking about what kind of dog would be good, "Maybe two would even be better." Dogs usually felt stronger with more. "I am sure Dante will be able to tell you what the top of the line security system is."
The waitress picked that moment in time to return to the table with their food. She set it all out and wished them a nice lunch. "If you need anything else just call for me." She added not moving away just yet, hoping she would get an excuse to come back to their table again.
Hera looked at the food before her and nodded her acceptance at the plate and food, before reaching for a drink of her tea. She glanced up at her son to see if he would make use of the opportunity he was being given or not, curious how far his interest would go with his mother present. "There would be long hours the dogs would have to go without attention unless we found someone to visit them once or twice a night," she pointed out, continuing at least part of the conversation despite the presence of the waitress.
Ares felt his mother's gaze so instead of flirting with the waitress more he just gave her a charming smile and thanked her for the food. The waitress left and Ares decided to see how far he would be able to go with the girl after his mother left. "Maybe a dog with a security guard, just for the nights." He responded. "For the day a guard might be too much but during the nights one can not be careful enough." He thought how simply that Brian character had been able to take Mel's baby.
"Perhaps. It would take a bit of searching to find someone trustworthy enough. Really, if I were in a large complex rather than my small personal office, I am sure that something of that nature would be more appropriate. As it is, I only have my office itself, and the lobby area to be concerned with." Bored guards did not seem nearly as responsible. Most likely they would simply fall asleep or try to break into her computer. She placed her napkin over her lap and picked up her fork to begin to pick at her food.
For a moment Ares ate silently before looking up at his mother. "Is there a reason you think your office needs more security?" He looked serious and he would not allow for any evasive answers. After the things that happened over the last months he was not going to stand by and let anything happen to his mother.
She peered up at him, meeting his eyes and arched an eyebrow. "No, [son]. The ease with which my brother was able to enter only pronounces the ease it would be for others. I have clients to protect. There is nothing of the family or personal interest within my office beyond that." In that, she was intelligent enough to be careful. Her office was more likely to be raided for blackmail reasons than anything to do with her family.
"But the ease that [uncle] enters places is extraordinary." Hades was able to get invisible after all. It wasn't really odd for the God of the Underworld to get into places others could not get in. "If you want I can check out how easy I can enter." He wasn't really the God of Thieves but he could sneak if it was asked of him.
"If you would like. You may wish to check with him and see how, exactly, it was that he was able to enter. I merely came into my office and found that he was already there." She returned to her food, eating it slowly and carefully, tasting the different parts to determine if she liked it or not.
"I will." Ares returned to his food too, he would ask Hades all about it. The idea of Hera walking into unwanted visitors was not something he liked. Even though nothing in her office could tie her to the Greeks that did not mean that the ones getting in would not hurt her. Blackmail was a lucrative business and for money a lot of people were capable of doing horrendous things.
A good thing she kept few files anyone but her would be able to read. And not needing many notes, as her profession was directly in line with her domain. Though, if they really worked at it, they might find something. Alas. Se would trust the issue to her son and brother at this point, and focus on other concerns. For the moment, she let the quiet be between them, as both continued with their food.
All kinds of ideas went through Ares' mind thinking about what he could do to a potential intruder and as he ate a scary grin played around his lips. He wanted his mother to be safe but he would love the chance to hurt someone. No surprises there!
Seeing the grin, Hera only barely managed to keep the sigh to herself. It was easy enough to guess what her son was thinking. So she decided to take the conversation to something he would possibly enjoy. "Have you been in any decent fights lately?"
"Just the one to get Mel's baby back." Ares didn't tell Hera what happened in detail, she knew her son so she probably would be able to guess. And the fact that Brian had not survived the fight was one of those details. "Afterwards Dante and I had a little fight for fun." He had lost that one, but he didn't mind, it just meant that he could ask for a 'rematch'.
"Mel's baby back?" She had heard nothing of this. The minor confusion caused by the statement showed on her face, as she paused, waiting for an explanation.
Ares looked at Hera and saw the confusion. "You didn't know?" That was unexpected. "During the Halloween party and auction for a good cause some fool took her baby." He put down his fork deciding he had enough. "We had fun getting her back." They really did have fun, he wouldn't change a thing about it.
"No, no one informed me. Did you retrieve the child quickly?" She assumed there were few to no problems, as nothing had been said. If it had taken longer, she hoped the muse would have taken the time to contact the family at large.
"We got the baby back to her mother the same day." Ares didn't really think about telling Hera or Zeus before, things seemed to get to them usually sooner then they got to him. "I think it had something to do with the father's family, but Dante might know more about the why of it all."
"I will ask him the next time we lunch together," she decided, and picked a bit more at her food. It was good, overall, though the sauce seemed just a bit sweeter than her preference. "At least her child is safe with her once more. I do not like the thought of another having the care for one of our children."
Ares had a lot of children and in his own way he loved them. He wasn't in the market for any more of them but the thought of any of his family being raised by anyone but the family was not something that appealed to him. "Especially not by a greedy [mortal] who is a too big a fool to even know who he is dealing with."
"The situation, however, is now resolved, and I am sure that the parents are properly pleased with the return of the child and will not soon forget the lesson learned." It was far to easy to loose children it seemed. She suspected that had the child been taken by that mortal group that had kidnapped Hestia and Demeter, the result would have been different, and the news far more spread around the family. She took a drink of her tea, watching her own son.
"Trusting [mortals] isn't always a good idea." Ares wasn't really sure that the person who took Mel's baby even knew that he had taken the child of a Muse but what ever the fool had known he took with him into his Everglades grave. He looked at his food and took a few more bites. He looked back at his mother wondering why she was watching him.
She smiled faintly at his look, and settled her cup of tea between her hands almost loosely, relaxed in her pose. It amused her to have him wonder. "The same could at times be said for members of the family. It all depends on the topic at hand. For example, that thief of my nephew..." Hermes. The ways he could and could not be trusted were always an interesting discussion.
"Is he in Miami?" Ares never knew what to make of Hermes and the best thing was usually just to stay out of his way, then again his thieving ways were amusing at times and seeing several members of his family angry was really amusing. "I don't think we need any more trouble at the moment." He smirked as he spoke, was there really a thing like too much trouble?
"Not that I am aware of, but I would not put it past him to know where we are long before we know he is here." That would be in his nature, it seemed. Then again, who was to say how the years had effected him?
Ares nodded in agreement, knowing Hermes he would be lurking around before making some grand entrance. Big egos were a family trade after all. "Maybe it would be useful to have more of us here." He spoke softly, because he could not believe he was even thinking about having more family around.
"Perhaps. It would be useful to be more united, but often we have each gone to follow our own interests." It would be impossible to force this family to do anything. Some would rebel simply to rebel. She drank her tea slowly, pondering the possibilities.
Ares pushed away his plate and thought about how useful or how useless some of his family members were. "Maybe we don't need them all." Some might probably get themselves in too much trouble and trouble was something his family didn't need any more off. He on the other hand would love some more trouble, of the fighting kind.
"I doubt we will be allowed to choose who we do and do not have show up in the city." If they had a choice... Well, she would have recommendations of her own. She pushed her own plate away and noticed that it seemed to cue the waitress to return to their table.
The waitress had been keeping an eye on them. She had wondered a little bit about the relationship between them, not that it was any of her business but the flirting had given her a little bit of hope. "Did you enjoy your lunch?"
Ares smiled at the girl, "I did, thank you very much."
"Yes, thank you." Hera pushed her finished plate a bit, and watched as the girl gathered them together. "Unless you wished for a desert or another drink, I believe we are ready for the check..." she asked, giving Ares the chance to get another coffee or perhaps something else if that was in his taste at the moment.
The desert Ares had in mind was not the kind he was going to discuss with his mother, so he gave her a little smile instead. "We are ready for the check." He looked at the waitress, wondering how good of a desert she would be.
That was far from Hera's concern and something she would leave him to discover on his own. Drinking the last of her tea, she neatly set it aside to be cleared when the waitress returned with the check. Now, to be motherly and pay, fair and at least pay her share, or simply leave her son to pick up the tab? She arched an eyebrow to him. "Unless you would be offended, I think I shall leave you to see to the check yourself, [my son]. I doubt that it could be something of a great inconvenience to you."
"I would not have it any other way, [mother dear]." Lunch was not going to make a dent in his finances, besides he could be a gentleman when he wanted too. Hera was one of the people he would move the world for which in the olden days would have been an easier feat then in these modern days. He gave the waitress his credit card 'accidentally' brushing against her hand as he did.
And it would allow her to leave and him to be able to 'subtly' get the girl's name and phone number. A goddess of marriage, courtship was not unknown to her. Though less of that was due to her domain and more to the length of time she had been around those who danced the dance of it. While he waited for his card to be run for the check, Hera stood to excuse herself from the table. She shifted enough to bend and give him a motherly kiss on the cheek. "[Do not cause problems,]" she murmured softly, knowing full well that telling him to 'be good' or 'stay out of trouble' would probably be too much to ask. Straightening, she made sure her clothes were in order as she prepared to leave. "Thank you for lunch, Ian."
Marriage and courtship were not really on the wargod's mind, physical satisfaction was. "[I won't cause more then usual.]" Ares tried to give his mother the most innocent look he could manage, the kind that probably didn't even fool anyone when he was a child. "Lunch was really nice, we should do it again soon." At that time the waitress returned, just in time to be the tall god's 'desert'.
"I am sure that we will." She gave him a small nod, then turned and left, leaving him to tend to the waitress.
Summary: A quiet mother and son lunch, talk about guard dogs, Mel's baby and family.
