Who: Teddy and Val
What: An end
Where: Washington D.C.
When: Right after the last Freyr/Val scene
Warnings: Slight emo?
Val sighed happily, slipping into the hotel room and kicking off her shoes. Her conversation with Freyr had been productive. She could finally sleep peacefully.
"V?" Sitting up in bed, Teddy rubbed at the sleep in his eyes. Apparently her return had awoken him. He yawned and stretched, scratched at his back before asking, "Where'd you go? Forget something?"
"I...went out for a walk," Val murmured, stripping out of her coat. "Sorry I woke you up."
Blinking, the god looked at the clock. "Awful long walk..."
"It was nice out," Val shrugged, moving over to the bed and sitting down.
"Ah, okay. Enjoying the sights?" He closed his eyes and laid back down, arm over his eyes. Most nights, he would've welcomed her back into bed with open arms. Tonight... he couldn't rally up the will. "I hear it's real nice out here at night."
"It's a beautiful city," Val said softly, lowering her head.
Uh oh... that tone. "Val?" he asked, sitting back up to put a hand on her shoulder, "what's the matter?"
"Teddy...you can just...I mean...just...go back to sleep," Val sighed, lying down in the bed.
"No, come on, tell me," he insisted. "You sound like your cat just died or somethin'."
"Look, I'm...not going to lie to you," Val sighed. "I didn't go for a walk around the city." Because that was a stupid thing to do late at night in DC.
He frowned with obvious disapproval. "Then you should've just said so," he grumbled, having a feeling he knew where this was going. Unless she'd had a burning desire to go check out the White House or something.
"I didn't want you to get upset," Val murmured, pushing her hair out of her face.
"Because lying to me doesn't upset me..." Oh, whatever. "Where'd you go, then?"
"I went to see Freyr," she said softly.
"..." He looked away, the look clear on his face: he'd figured as much.
Val glanced over her shoulder at him. She didn't know how to make this better for him. "Teddy..."
"Val, maybe we need to talk," he interrupted, looking back to her. He swung his legs around so they were side by side. He didn't want to talk like this, with them not even able to look at each other.
"I think so," she nodded, glancing over at him. She sat in silence, waiting to hear what he had to say.
"I..." Whoa. No words. He swallowed hard, feeling dumb for not knowing what he was supposed to say. "I don't think this is working out," he said, quite aware of how dumb and cliche that sounded. But it was all he could think of.
Val frowned, hands fiddling with the hem of her shirt. "I didn't want this to happen..."
Reaching over, he took her hands into his, giving them a small squeeze. "Me neither."
"I'm sorry," Val murmured, leaning her head on his shoulder. "I know how much you care about me..." She had never quite been able to reciprocate
An arm wrapped around her waist, and he let his chin rest atop her head. "It's not your fault. S'not mine, either," he said. "It's just... I dunno..." He sighed. "Not good for us. You can't build a house with two people who want two different things."
Val wasn't even sure she had ever wanted to 'build a house' with him. This was probably for the best. "I agree."
Well, it was an expression. "It doesn't mean I love you any less," he pointed out, staring at her quite seriously. He absolutely didn't want her to think that. "You'll always be my sister. You'll always be someone I want to take care of. And if you ever need me, you just gotta say so and I'll be there. Okay?"
"That goes for me too," Val smiled, glancing up at him. She wrapped her arms around his waist. "I'm sorry I got you into this mess."
He shrugged off the apology wit a small smile of his own, replying, "I should be the one saying sorry. Wasn't for me, you wouldn't have gotten kidnapped." He paused, and then asked, "So... what now?"
"We wait to see what the family says, I guess," Val shrugged. "And we get some more sleep."
Nodding, he gave her a kiss. Then, on a thought, deepened it. "[Let's not make this a sad night,]" he murmured. "[Let's part on the best of terms... the best of memories.]"
Val could live with that. "[Alright.]" She smiled, slipping into his lap. Then, a thought struck her. "Umm...[You know we can't...all the way...because of this mess.]"
Teddy nodded in understanding, running his hands down her arms. "[It's okay.]"
Val kissed him, a little sad that she couldn't even give him a proper parting.
