Who: Zeus and Deme
What: Dreamscape~~~~
Where: See above
When: BACKDATED to the day after the kidnapping/rescue, so Jan 21st or so
Warnings: Swearing and angstiness
Zeus had been in the middle of paperwork when he'd heard the oath, just a day or so ago. Oaths were funny things; Zeus could feel them, when they were made in his name. Like someone tugging on the hairs along his neck. The more the person meant the oath, the stronger the pull. And it could depend on location. He could feel someone swear on his name in Miami, but everywhere else was a bit of a dead end.
This oath... it was a big 'un. He had snapped up out of his work to look around when he'd heard his sister's voice echoing around his room. "Demeter?" No one. Which meant, an oath. But why and where? Somewhere in Miami... and something in him knew something where was wrong. He loved to play inspector, first off. And he was fairly good. He looked around Poseidon's house, only to find it empty. And then Hestia's house. Empty... It was only until he got back that he learned from his wife that Hestia had given birth there only hours ago. He got the story then.
Needless to say, he'd been in a rage. Why hadn't anyone told him. He was the patriarch, dammit! After a few hours of stomping around his office and damn near giving poor Alana a stroke, he was calm enough to act. He didn't know how to find her. They could even be out of Miami... or the country. He didn't know how else to reach his sister. There was just one thing he could think of, and it was still a long shot.
Zeus sat in his office, in his favorite chair, and relaxed into sleep. Awaiting the dreamscape.
To say that Demeter was unhappy was an understatement. After vowing to exchange herself for her beloved ones, and then being taken away so quickly from her children, the earth goddess had slipped into a deep depression. Coupled with the nausea she felt whenever she flew, it was no wonder she felt completely ill when the helicopter finally landed on the roof of some random high rise office building in the heart of downtown Miami. From there she was hustled into a dark luxury car where Haru was waiting for her.
Though he knew there was much that he and the Subrosa wanted to learn from Demeter, the young man could tell his former godmother was not well in the least. So it was with little resistance that Demeter took an offered sedative similar to what she'd been given when she was first kidnapped. At this point in time, all the goddess wanted was the blissful oblivion of sleep.
The sedative worked quickly, and Demeter was soon passed out within the back seat of the car. The dreams fed by the medicated sleep brought her no relief, though. In her dreams, the earth goddess was curled up and sobbing in the corner of a seemingly solid glass box, cut off from the dull colored meadows and fields around her. There were no visible doors or windows. Despite this, however, a long golden chain that was wound around her neck like a leash seemed to pass through the translucent prison as if the walls weren't really there, and trailed off into the distance of her dreamscape.
Ah-ha. Zeus was so aware of the stroke of luck that was coming his way. The chain ended its path on his wrist, as if chaining him to her as much as she was to him. He took it in hand and took to the non-existent air of the dream, flying as fast as his thoughts would allow him. He saw Miami under him as a ghost of the city while his soul wandered. It seemed to go forever. But when his sister, his precious elder sister, finally came into sight he couldn't help but let out a cry of joy.
"Demeter!"
At the sound of her name, Demeter raised her head a little bit from her arms. She wiped some of the tears from her face and looked around for the source of it, though she didn't even think to look upwards towards the sky for it.
Down towards the 'ground', Zeus swooped down for a landing. His shadow cast a huge hawk-like shape around Demeter, and then he was facing her. Admittedly, a hundred emotions ran through him. But the easiest to channel was rage. "[Are you an idiot?]" he roared.
Demeter closed her eyes in the face of her baby brother's fury. "[I did what I had to in order to ensure the freedom of Hestia and Zale,]" she responded quietly.
The sky god stood there for a second, shaking with his anger. "[You've endangered us all,]" he whispered, but somehow the whisper was even worse than the yell. "[Don't you see that? What have you told them?]"
The earth goddess opened her eyes but didn't turn her gaze to her brother. She stared out at the expanse of the meadows around them as they started gradually shifting. All the color seemed to be slowly bleeding away, leaving the grass and flowers behind in various shades of brown and gray. "[Nothing yet, save for that Hestia's children were Hades, and that holding just me would be less lethal for them than holding her and my son.]" She sighed. Would it even be possible to reason with her brother when he was in this sort of mood?
Possible. Even then, his anger was starting to cool. "[And what will they do to you if you don't tell them anything? Did you think of that? We can't leave you with them, sister. I won't stand for it.]" There, worry in his voice. And, buried under the layers, a fear that his family had yet another enemy to fight.
"[At the time, all that mattered to me was getting Hestia and Zale home...]" Demeter murmured before finally looking at her brother, a grieved expression in her face. "[Would you have rather had her give birth to her sons in the custody of these people, if she even let them be born in the first place? Compared to that, what happens to me now is a price I was and am willing to pay for her.]" She rested her head upon her arms. "[I don't think... they will hurt me...]"
"[... Hestia and her boys are safe. The delivery went fine,]" he admitted. He had to look away then. The chain hung between them heavily and too bright for the drab scene. "[Hades is caring your Zale. But how can you be sure? These are humans, Demeter. They are far crueller than any one of us have ever been.]"
At the news about Hestia, Demeter finally allowed herself a small, relieved smile. "[Thank Gaea,]" she whispered. The smile faded, though, as quickly as it had appeared. "[Speaking with one of the ones responsible for taking us, he said that it was for our own protection.]" Demeter turned her weary brown eyes to her brother. "[He said that the Egyptians were watching Hestia's home... That they had been watching me since they attacked my own. I don't know if this is true or not, but that the know of the Egyptians, and speak of working against them... ]" It was confusing to Demeter still. She also did not want to mention Haru by name yet, or her connection to him. She didn't want her mortal godchild hurt or worse by her vengeful family.
Zeus scowled down to the ground, almost snarled. "[So you're a specimen to them? You are not helping your case, Demeter. Where are you? We have to get you back.]"
Demeter felt her eyes well up with tears again, though she turned her gaze aside to hide them from her brother. When she finally spoke, the unfamiliar tone of helplessness in her voice was unmistakable. "[I... I don't know. They took me in a helicopter at first. Being in the air always makes me so ill.]" In the dreamscape, the scenery changed so that instead of being in a meadow, they were high up, thousands of feet in the air above the city of Miami. However the scenery was not stable in the least. It was as if the land and skyscape was one big constantly undulating funhouse mirror. Things were bigger, then smaller... then twisted and turned and pitched and rose. Though there was no helicopter around, the sound of the blades cutting through the air was painfully deafening. Demeter squeezed her eyes shut and clapped her hands to her ears. Still, despite the obvious debilitating illustration of vertigo the goddess had experienced, one could see that they were moving gradually to the downtown area of Miami before finally settling down upon one of the tall skyscrapers within it.
Zeus looked about the dreamscape so intently, it looked like his eyes might pop. He was committing it all to his impressive memory. But once he saw her move her hands, all anger in him finally ebbed away. "[Shh...]" Stepping forward, the youngest brother put his arms about her and held her tight. His fear rose up again in place of the anger. It was not well for a king to admit to worry and fear. He'd learned a long time ago how to keep it to himself. He was the pillar. Pillars couldn't crack. "[I swear it Demeter. I will find you, and bring you back to your son, to your family. Even if I have to tear up half of Miami.]"
Within Zeus's powerful arms, Demeter instinctively buried her face against his chest, trembling as she relived her bout with air sickness compounded with everything else that had happened since her kidnapping. In the dreamscape that reflected Demeter's mind, her memories continued.
Though still warped in appearance, and looking not quite realistic, the scenery shifted from a helicopter to a dark colored car. It was driven by a chaeuffer, but the face of the person was nothing but an unnerving blank expanse of smooth skin. It was the same for the other humans who had escorted her to that point. She couldn't remember their faces.
However, once inside the back of the car, the goddess was not alone. Beside her sat a young asian boy who looked only slightly older than Zale. He had piercing dark eyes and a lollipop in his hand. The boy seemed to say something, but though his lips moved, no words came out. Then the scenery darkened, like a movie fading to black and returning the gray meadow back in place.
Zeus glowered at the boy. How he wished to let the Asian boy that he'd have the honor of dying by the hand of Zeus. "[We'll find you,]" he murmured. It seemed almost to himself as much to her. He cupped her face and turned it up to face his, planting a kiss on her cheek. "[Don't tell them anything. Maybe they're telling the truth. Maybe they're not. And I really, really don't want to find out the repercussions if they're not. Whatever pain they inflict on you, my dearest sister, I will inflict on them a hundred fold.]"
Demeter nodded tearfully. "[I'll try,]" she said. Though she wished she could promise not to tell them "anything," a part of her feared that if she kept completely silent, they might reconsider going after the rest of her family again.
It might be a risk to take. He kissed her again, gently on the lips this time, and gave her a final hug before he allowed the dreamscape to escape his grasp.
"[Brother wait!]" Demeter reached out towards Zeus, even as he slipped a way. "[Please check on Zale for me!]" Though the kiss had caught her offguard for a moment, her thoughts snapped back to quasi-reality and her top concern came forth. "[Please... make sure he's ok.]"
"[I will!]" he called, the last words he was able to leave her and he awoke, back in his chair in the office. A cold sweat had had appeared along his brow, and he wiped it away with his sleeve. Yes. He was afraid for Demeter. He could admit that much... For now, he would have to investigate and do his best to find his sister. And keep good on his promise to watch over his nephew.
Summary: Having learned of the attacks -- and understandably pissed for not being let in on the joke, har har -- and goes about finding Deme the only way he can at the moment. Via dreamscape. The two have a heartfelt reunion, Deme frets about everyone else while Zeus promises repeatedly to gut out people, all the while being quite clingy. The two part with a kiss and a promise on Zeus' part to check on her son.
