WHO: Isaac Lahey, Derek Hale
WHAT: Saying hello
WHEN:Monday Night
WHERE: School grounds
WARNINGS: TBD
STATUS: Closed/Completed Gdoc
Paige had let him know that Chris Argent was here at the school when they’d talked. She’d also let him know that Isaac was also here. It made sense since the last time he’d seen Isaac he was leaving with Argent. Derek just hadn’t expected to see either of them here. Selfishly he kind of wished that Isaac wasn’t here because Derek hadn’t exactly been a great alpha to him but maybe it was time to man up to that and deal with it.
Which was why he was standing on one of the paths waiting for Isaac to walk by. Old habits meant he was waiting in a place where Isaac’s scent would come to him instead of letting Isaac know he was there.
When he finally caught Isaac’s scent he stepped forward to be visible.
“Isaac.”
***
Isaac’s mind had been on Allison, like it usually was, and Derek stepping out surprised him. His eyes went yellow and his claws extended a little, but when he saw who it was, he took a deep breath and tried to relax. Not that being around Derek was in any way relaxing. It was quite the opposite, actually.
“Uh. Hey. Derek. I - I didn’t know you were here.”
***
“Well I didn’t know you were here either until someone told me.” Derek noted the reaction and was glad there weren’t people around to really see anything. But then again that was why he’d picked where he did. It was just in case Isaac felt the need to hit him or get more wolfed out to yell at him.
“I thought it would be better to let you know I was here then let it be a surprise in a crowded place.”
***
“Oh,” he said, looking at the ground and awkwardly shoving his hands in his pockets. He was putting forth the attitude of a very submissive Beta, which was how he felt around Derek. Derek had never been gentle, and although he’d understood why...well, when he’d kicked him out it had broken him even more than he had been to start with. He really wasn’t sure if he wanted to cry or attack him. A little of both.
“Well,” he said. “Now I know.”
***
The Derek that had chosen Isaac to be his beta along with two other broken teenagers didn’t really have the capacity to be gentle. He was starting to relearn it. Although Isaac might have been surprised to see how Derek had reacted when he’d found him not breathing at the hospital after he’d been electrocuted.
“It might not have been expected...but I’m glad to see you Isaac.”
***
Isaac looked up at him for a brief moment, complete disbelief on his face. He couldn’t believe that Derek was in the least bit happy to see him. Why should he be? He’d kicked him out, and yet still couldn’t seem to get away from him.
“Are you?”
He knew he wasn’t being particularly friendly, but he really didn’t feel it at the moment.
***
It was okay. Derek didn’t expect to be welcomed with open arms by any means. “I know it probably isn’t the answer you thought but, yes, I’m glad.” He was alive, in one piece, hadn’t gone off the deep end and killed anyone or got himself killed. Derek was glad.
“I understand that might not go both ways.”
***
“Why should it?” He asked, daring a quick glance up at him again before dropping his eyes. “Why should I care about you? You kicked me out. You made it clear you didn’t want me.”
The pain of that was obvious in the way he stood there.
***
“I know.” Derek nodded even though Isaac wasn’t looking at him. He preferred the Isaac that had been in his face chewing him out for not helping when Cora was dying. He hoped he’d get to see him that way again.
“I did it to protect you. Or I was trying to protect you anyway.” His shoulders slumped slightly. “Obviously it didn’t work.”
***
“How were you protecting me by kicking me out of my pack?” He screamed angrily. Those words just...got to him, and he fired up a little. “I had nowhere to go! I wandered the street in the rain, wondering what I’d done to make you hate me so much!”
He clenched his fist, looking away.
“I have a home now. And it isn’t with you.”
***
And there was the angry side Derek had wanted to see. He was actually rethinking that now. “They were going to make me kill my pack Isaac. Yes, I thought you kicked out was better than dead.” Derek stayed where he was, moving closer would either start a fight or make Isaac run. Moving further away could do the same. This all had to be on Isaac’s terms.
“I know. I’m not trying to take you from your new home Isaac. You deserve a home.”
***
“So what do you want?” He asked coldly. “If you don’t want to take me from my home, why talk to me at all?”
He was trying to keep up the anger but it was failing. Derek was his Alpha, and even if he wasn't technically an Alpha anymore, there was still a bond between them, and Isaac still felt the need to submit to him.
“Why did you come here?”
***
“Like I said, I didn’t want to surprise you.” Derek knew that there was still a bond between them since he’d felt it in Beacon Hills but he’d thought somehow maybe it might fade over time. It really didn’t seem to be doing that. “And...maybe to apologize.” That was probably one of the most awkward statements ever. Derek didn’t really do apologies. They didn’t fit with his being pissed off at the world. Of course ever since getting to talk to his mother through her claws he wasn’t as pissed off as he used to be.
“I just couldn’t go back to Beacon Hills. I didn’t know you were all here. Which begs the question of why we’re all drawn here. We can’t even leave town and get away from each other.”
***
“Drawn here?” He asked. “It’s a school, not a supernatural beacon.” He rolled his eyes a little. He refused to think that this place was anything like that. It had been peaceful here so far, and he loved that. He needed that after everything that had been through recently.
Of course, maybe it wasn’t normal that his dead girlfriend seemed to be haunting him, but he wasn't going to bring that up.
“Fine,” he said, in response to Derek’s apology, but then he deflated a little. “There’s another werewolf here from home,” he said with a shrug. “Miss K. I don't know if you know her or not, but she’s kind of hot.”
What? She was.
***
Derek on the other hand didn’t think that the universe would be completely done with them. It wasn’t how it worked in his world and damn it Scott was right when he said he hadn’t done enough to warn them before he turned them. They all scattered then ended up in the same place. That was not normal.
What Isaac said put an instant scowl on Derek’s face and he ended up rubbing his fingers over his forehead like he had a headache. “Yeah. I know her. Paige Krasikeva, we went to high school together.”
Allison hadn’t been talking much but that had her attention immediately. She, Scott, Lydia and Stiles had compared notes after talking to Peter and Gerard. “She’s supposed to be dead. Derek killed her when she didn’t turn and was dying.” Out of habit she’d said it low for Isaac’s hearing even though Derek wouldn’t hear her.
***
“Oh, she’s the reason his -” he cut himself off, but it was probably too late. He took a step back, just in case Derek wolfed out on him, quickly changing the subject.
“So, um, since you were born this way...what do you know about ghosts?”
He figured he’d might as well get any information out of him that he could.
***
“She’s the reason his what?” Derek didn’t wolf out but Isaac now had that laser like focus that Derek could get directed at him in a way it hadn’t been for a while now. That had been a really odd non sequitur in the conversation.
“Ghosts? Stories mostly. Legends.” He had a feeling that had to do with the random comment. “Why?”
***
...that his eyes were blue as a beta… But Isaac wasn’t about to say that to him. He didn’t want to die.
“Nothing, I was just thinking,” he shrugged. “I think I’m being haunted,” he said matter-of-factly. “By Allison.”
***
There was definitely a suspicious look for the ‘nothing’ but luckily Isaac went on to something that was more interesting. “Seriously?” Derek couldn’t help looking around and extending his senses but he couldn’t pick up anything. “How do you know?”
***
“Because she keeps talking to me.” That was a good enough reason, wasn’t it? “She’s following me around. Talking to me. Telling me things I couldn’t possibly know any other way.” He shrugged. He knew it sounded crazy. He’d thought he was crazy to start with, too. Now he wasn’t so sure.
***
“I take it you verified these things you wouldn’t know any other way.” It wasn’t a question. Isaac could be a pain with the sarcasm and avoidance but he tended out of all of them...even Stiles...to hit the truth whether you wanted it or not.
“There’s a few legends I’ve heard. Sometimes spirits could be put into an object and it could either be a thing of respect or punishment to have to continue on as something that was basically an inanimate tool. There’s also the stories of people opening themselves to spirits to take on their wisdom. Channeling. Celtic mythology is full of spirits that don’t move on for different reasons.”
***
“Of course I did,” he said, rolling his eyes. It had been one of the first things he’d done.
“Okay…” he said slowly, crossing his arms. “Any idea on how to make them into people again?”
***
Yeah, it really hadn’t been a question. Derek tilted his head slightly to the side looking at Isaac then shrugged lightly. “You have to thin the veil. Like the stories of Samhain where the other side and this one are closer together.”
***
“Okay…” Isaac said slowly. “And how do you do that?” He really wasn’t looking for theory here, but a hands on way to make this happen. Now that Allison was close, he couldn’t bear not being able to hold her.
***
“I’m not a druid Isaac, you should probably find one or someone like one.” Derek frowned slightly but he did have a few facts that might help. “Look the only things I know are stories but they all say the in between times are what make the veil thin. That’s why Samhain is like that, it’s the transition from the old year to the new year in the old calendars. So dawn, dusk, midnight for times, in doorways, on a bridge, in a tunnel...that sort of thing for locations. But you’d better get someone who knows how to get the right spirit and how to make it work because you don’t want to get her back and bring a lot of other things with her.”
***
That was for sure. They’d all suffered through what happened when the wrong things came back with them. Stiles hadn’t been able to close the door to his mind, and that had led to the Nogitsune. The last thing they needed was to deal with something like that again.
“Yeah,” he said, shoulders slumping. He’d been here for a whole semester, and while he knew that there were other werewolves, and even vampires, he didn’t know of any druids of witches.
***
“Deaton might answer a phone call.” The man sometimes was helpful and sometimes he wasn’t but he might be their best resource. Out of all the advisors to the packs he was the most reliable from what Derek could tell. “What about Argent? Did he have contacts?”
***
Isaac brightened a little. “I’ve talked to Chris. He said he’d try to find out what he could. He wants her back too, of course.” They both did. More than just about anything in the world. “And maybe I will call Deaton. He’s...well, druidy, but also really good at this stuff.”
***
“He was the advisor for my mother’s pack. He does try to be helpful and he’s not quite as hard to deal with as his sister.” Derek had been surprised to learn what Deaton was to his mother. It made him a lot more trusting of the man than he normally would be. He trusted his mother’s judgement.
***
“Oh,” Isaac said, and there was actually interest in that syllable. He didn’t actually know that Druids advised wolf packs, although it made sense together with everything he’d done for Scott. Huh.
“So...maybe since I’m in your pack...he might help me out?”
***
“Maybe.” Isaac had just said he was in Derek’s pack. That was an interesting development. “He made promises to my mother but I don’t know if that covers my pack. But it’s worth a try.” Derek wasn’t going to try to force Isaac out of his relationship with Chris Argent. The man was actually a good teacher and would be good at keeping Isaac safe. But he would still like to have pack.
“If you still want some teaching about being a werewolf I’m available.”
***
He hadn’t even meant to say it. It had just come out, probably prompted by the connection he still felt between them. It annoyed him a little, but he couldn’t deny it. Derek was his Alpha, whether he was technically an Alpha or not. There was no changing that, no matter how much he might want to.
“Yeah, I think I’ll try that with Deaton.”
At Derek’s offer, he tensed a little.
“I don’t know. I think...I think I’ve pretty much got the hang of it now. Scott taught me a lot.”
***
“Scott’s good but he has a lot to learn too.” Scott was learning fast but Derek was born a werewolf and came from a long line of werewolves. He still had a lot he could teach all of them but right now he wasn’t going to push.
“It’s just an offer Isaac. You don’t have to take me up on it.”
***
“I...might. I don’t know. I mean, I’m sure you know a lot but…” But he just wasn’t sure he wanted to go down that road, no matter what he might have said about being part of Derek’s pack. That led to dangerous places, and getting his heart broken again.
***
“I know I didn’t do a good job of it before Isaac.” He’d figured that out from talking to his mother and from watching what it was Scott did with his pack. Derek had been alone and angry too long. Being lonely did not equate to having social skills no matter how much he wanted to pretend he had them.
“I’d like to try again. When you’re ready.”
***
“When I’m ready,” Isaac repeated. “Yeah. I can do that.” With that qualification, he might never have to, since who knew if he’d ever be ready.
“Look,” he said, shifting his weight a bit awkwardly. “I have to get to class.”
***
That was why the qualification was put on there. All Isaac ever had to do was say he wasn’t ready yet and there was no argument. But Derek was still going to watch out for him like an Alpha should. Like he should have before.
“I’ll let you know if I find anything else on spirits. Don’t be late for class.”
