( Sam dragged himself from an uncomfortable sleep as he remembered the previous night's misery. He reached for Frodo and found sheet. )

Sorry for the delay in posting more. I've been insanely busy with work, and that is now much calmer. I'm editing the next chapter, which is a bit of a complex business, and once that is posted, I should be able to stay more on track for the next several months. I have few other writing obligations at the moment, which should ensure a good deal of time for writing and editing this story.

Thanks to the comments I have received about the deletion of Chiaroscuro, and the fact that I've had a chance to calm down and think more clearly after the activity of the last couple of weeks, I have decided to reinstate that chapter. There were strong warnings on it, and they will be made stronger. Among the points that have been made by those who have commented are that it added depth and interest to the story, and that deleting it would leave several plot and character points hanging. Those comments are all true. If I were to start this story over again, I would probably do things differently. However, such is not the case, and the problem of fixing all the other chapters in order to reconcile them with the loss of this one is a more daunting one than I had imagined, which tells me that it is perhaps not quite so gratuitous as I had thought.

I have maintained a policy, in general, of not deleting works that I have posted, and I violated that in this case. In the interest of following the Shakespearean axiom of being true to oneself, I'm going to put the chapter back and let the chips fall where they may. I will stand by my promise that any future chapters featuring upsetting incidents in the lives of our heroes will be carefully tied into the overall story.

Thank you for your patience. The next chapter should be posted within two days.

There have been a few developments concerning Old Winyards. The first is that thuri has decided that she no longer wishes to participate in the writing of this story. We have both agreed that I shall keep writing it. The next few chapters that will be posted were written with her. I shall attempt to keep the same delicate touch with which she wrote Frodo.

The second is that, after careful consideration and thought, I have decided to delete Chapter 16 ('Chiaroscuro'). It is not strictly necessary for the story, nor is it in keeping with the spirit of what we tried to set up. I take responsibility for my part in it (which was substantial), and I apologize for its initial inclusion. If you should happen to want a copy of it, please feel free to comment or email me for it. (LJ will not allow one to make an entry in a community private, so I fear it must be deleted.) The chapters after it will be re-numbered, and while there will be difficult things ahead for Frodo and Sam, they will not be gratuitous, which this really was.

I shall post the next chapter as soon as I can, and I apologize for the delay.

I had thought that I had one set to go, but it really looked too much like a couple of others that have been posted recently, so I'm going to incorporate the important stuff into the chapter that actually starts to advance the story in a more meaningful way.
