WHO: Seth Gecko, Alex Udinov and eventually Matt Murdock WHERE: Out and about the streets WHEN: Monday night WHAT: Seth tries to rob Alex, Alex kicks his butt, Matt tries to save Alex but sees that it’s more Seth that needs the saving and the three of them are attacked by zombie!vamps! WARNING: Violence. Zombie!Vampire staking STATUS: log; complete.
Seth had been a prisoner here in Hawaii for about two months and while he wasn’t fond of the idea of being stuck somewhere, it could be worse. He had been in prison before and compared to that, he’d take Hawaii any day. And Kate was here, which was another bonus that prison didn’t have.
The problem was, he was getting bored. He had been spending time lifting money and other valuables from unsuspecting tourists. He had been spending time watching the comings and goings at the local bank here and dreaming up a heist. Seth was a confident man but without his brother here to help, it may be too risky to try on his own.
After another successful day of a nice sum of money and valuables, Seth was headed back to the apartments. He was thinking of stopping to grab some food and taking it to Kate to check on her. When he turned the corner, he noticed a woman walking down the street. As he walked, he watched the woman and eyed the purse she carried and he deemed her to be an easy target. Seth quietly walked closer behind the woman and carefully started to reach into the purse to grab the wallet that he saw in the bag.
*** Unfortunately for Seth, he just picked the wrong person to rob. Alex was no helpless damsel. And she was smart enough to not carry much cash anyway. Most other people likely wouldn't even have detected Seth, but Alex was not most people and she never had been. She always had to be aware, always looking over her shoulder. Even here.
She very calmly grabbed the arm that Seth was trying to put in her purse and twisted it behind his back. "I don't think you ought to be doing that." No wonder he'd been complimenting the tourists. He'd probably been robbing them the whole time. Well, he had just made a big mistake and Alex was going to make sure he knew it.
Maybe it was just fun for Seth, or maybe he had to do it to survive. Alex had been there, she'd lived on the streets after she'd escaped, doing just about anything to get her next fix. But she wasn't that girl anymore. And had he asked nicely, she might have just given him some money. After all, what was she going to do with all of it?
***** Seth had robbed many people in his time with much success so he was not expecting for the woman to react the way she did. She moved fast and before he knew what was happening, his arm had been twisted behind his back. Any effort of his to move left him in more pain. Of course, he was not about to admit that out loud.
Seth tried to stand straighter and twist out of the woman’s grasp but the effort made him cringe and he had no choice to bend slightly forward if he wanted to keep his arm in its socket. He had definitely under-estimated this one. Perhaps when his arm wasn’t being threatened to be yanked right off of his body, he’d be impressed.
“What are you? A ninja?”
**** Alex laughed, and let go of his arm. "No, I'm not a ninja. I'll tell you what else I'm not, a victim. Not anymore." Those last words were said with a hint of sadness and a weight of a past only a former victim could be forced to carry. For Alex, her past was inescapable, even as she wanted to convince herself she wasn't that girl anymore.
"What I am is a girl you don't want to try and rob." He was getting off light if all she did was twist his arm. What he did next would determine how she would proceed. No wonder he liked the tourists.
Seth was lucky that Alex's bodyguard wasn't here, as Sam would have probably shot him too for good measure. Alex was a little nicer than Sam. "Why are you robbing people anyway? Are you bored or do you genuinely need the money?"
**** Seth was relieved when Alex let go of his arm and he rotated his shoulder, wincing slightly and he turned back to face her as she told him that she wasn’t a ninja and she wasn’t a victim anymore. His eyebrow shot up slightly. He could tell there was something behind that but he wasn’t likely to learn what it was.
Seth looked at the woman as she asked him why he was robbing people. He gave a small smirk. “Perhaps a little of both. If someone doesn’t want something stolen, they shouldn’t make it so easy. And in order to survive, you have to have money.” It’s not like he had a job here. Getting a job could be risky here. If a potential employer required a criminal record check, he was screwed as they’d find out that he was an escaped convict. He was not going back to prison.
Matt had been up on the roof of the apartment building as he often did at night. He listened to the streets, getting used to the scents and the sounds that Hawaii has to offer. When he heard a scuffle a few blocks away, he made his way over to the rooftop over the two. When he heard Alex’s voice, Matt’s blood boiled. He wasn’t going to let his friend get hurt. He started to make his way down to the ground but he stopped, surprised when he heard the man wince in pain. It seemed as though Alex had everything under control, which he definitely found intriguing.
Continuing his way down, he made the last leap onto the ground, landing silently before he straightened up. “Is everything okay here?”
******
“Believe me, I know that.” Alex told Seth, shaking her head. “But you can also get something called a job.” She pointed out. “Or I don’t know, ask nicely?” Robbing people was definitely not nice. Alex had done worse to get her next fix back in the day, but that wasn’t who she was anymore. If Seth needed money, Alex would have been happy to give it to him.
“The next person you try and rob might not be as nice as me. If my bodyguard were here, he would have shot you.” And Sam didn’t miss. Alex kind of missed him. They’d maybe had something started, and now she’d probably never know. Then again, she needed to figure herself out first.
Her verbal lashing of the would be thief was interrupted when suddenly a masked man appeared almost out of nowhere. Alex briefly wondered if he’d gone to the Nikita school too. “Yep, everything’s fine.” She said. She didn’t think Seth would try anything now that he knew what he was up against.
*****
“It’s not that simple.” Seth had his reasons and didn’t want to divulge them, yet. Bank heists and looking after his brother were his full time job. Here he didn’t have that so he had to fill his time doing something so he did what he knew how to do best. And that was robbing people to make some quick cash.
Seth was amused when Alex suggested that he could ask nicely for the money. “Ask nicely? How many people do you know that would just happily hand over money?” Not many that he knew anyways. “You have a bodyguard?” His eyes glanced over Alex. There was definitely something more to this woman. “Why do you need a bodyguard? From what I just saw, you definitely don’t need one.”
When their conversation was suddenly interrupted by the appearance of a masked man, Seth couldn't help himself, he was amused. Who ran around in a suit like that? It didn’t take him long to notice the defensive stance the masked man held though. Seth glanced over to Alex and pointed at the masked man with his thumb, his eyebrows raised. “Is this your bodyguard?”
Matt stood by the two, assessing the situation. Alex seemed calm, her heart beat was steady as ever and definitely not as it should be for an almost robbery victim. The adrenaline should have been coursing through her veins by now from the attack. This left him extremely intrigued.
The man, well, he seemed cocky and while the situation seemed to be diffused and under control, Matt was not going to leave Alex alone with him. “Bodyguard?” Matt chuckled. “No. I’m more of a concerned party.” Matt’s head tilted slightly as he caught the noise of the stones shifting under Seth’s feet as he shifted his weight. “As the lady said though, the next person you try to rob may not let you off so easily as she did.” He gave a small smirk. Matt almost wished Seth had tried to rob him. Surely a blind man would have appeared to be an easy target and Matt wouldn’t have let Seth off as easily as Alex did. “How about you apologize to the lady here and we can all get on our way.”
What the three of them didn’t know, is that they were being watched by five vampires. These vampires were covered in dark veins all over their body as the Hep-V virus coursed through them. While not dangerous to humans, Hep-V was fatal to vampires and these vampires were in the late stages of the virus which led them extremely blood-thirsty. They’d feed and kill anything with a heart beat at this point and these three humans would be a perfect appetizer for them. It wasn’t long until the five vampires had the three humans surrounded, their growls resonating the air.
Seth heard the all too familiar growl, glancing over to see the five vampires surrounding them. “Terrific.” He had thought his vampire slaying days were over.
***** It never was that simple, and Alex would have told Seth that but it didn't seem necessary right now. They'd been joined by some masked man who probably thought that Alex was some kind of damsel. The thought was a little amusing, she had to admit. Most people underestimated her. She didn't look like much of a threat.
"No, Sam's not here." Alex said when Seth asked if Matt was her bodyguard. "Back home, I'm something of a public figure I work for the United Nations, so having a bodyguard is necessary." She explained. She didn't mind telling them, everyone at home knew already. She didn't necessarily need a bodyguard here, but one never knew what could happen.
And when they were suddenly surrounded by very pale veiny things, her heartbeat quickened. A guy like Seth, she could handle. Vampires? That was another matter entirely. Strong and tough and as skilled as she was, Alex was still only human.
Her eyes widened. "What the hell?" They looked practically ravenous. This was not likely to end well.
*****
This wasn’t good. Not good at all. Seth watched as the vampires closed in around them, his arm shooting out on instinct and pushing Alex away further away from them. She may be able to hold her own but these were not humans. They were monsters who would kill without a second thought.
“I thought I left the vampires behind.” Seth muttered, looking at the vampires. They didn’t look like the culebras that he had dealt with but he knew they still wouldn’t be an easy kill.
Matt was instantly on alert as soon as he heard both Alex and Seth’s heartbeats quicken and growls that sounded animalistic. He listened, detecting no other heartbeats but there was definitely a threat. Matt instinctively closed in with Seth and Alex, almost scoffing when Seth mentioned vampires. “Vampires? You’re joking, right? I thought they only existed in horror movies. How many?” His guess was three. Without hearing their heart or breath, it was hard to tell. Seth glanced around their surroundings, cursing as he saw nothing they could use as a weapon, glancing over at the masked man when he asked how many there were. “What’s the matter? Unable to count? Five. I’ve seen vampires before but they weren’t like these ones.” Seth backed up a few more steps as the vampires advanced on them. “Only way to kill them is a wooden stake through the heart or tearing their heads off!”
Seth was too busy looking for something they could use as a weapon that he didn’t see a vampire advance on them and grab Alex. “Shit!” Seth made a move towards the vampire that grabbed Alex but he was intercepted by another vampire, who pushed him away. Of course, being a vampire, the push was more like throwing Seth through the air until he hit the wall of a building and fell. The impact dazed him but he didn’t have time to wait to regain his bearings. He pulled himself to his feet and faced the vampire that was eyeing him up for dinner.
Matt knew Alex was in trouble and he was instantly fuming. He also heard Seth hit the wall but he was relieved to know that Seth at least was on his feet again. For a moment, Matt felt out of his element. He was a capable fighter but he had no idea how to battle these vampires. Not to mention he couldn’t actually see them. Matt moved towards Alex, managing to shove the vampire away from her but he was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground. He got to his feet quickly and prepared himself for another attack. “We need to find something to use as a weapon!”
Or become dinner.
****
Vampires. Alex thought she remembered hearing something about vampires being here, but there hadn’t been any known attacks. No one had seemed that concerned about it, not even 5-0. They’d have to be concerned about this. At least Seth seemed to know what to do with them.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she was grabbed. It figured that they would go for the girl first, like she was automatically weak or something. Insulting. She didn’t have much time to dwell on that though, before the vampire who had grabbed her bit into her neck. She struggled but the vampire was stronger. This was not good.
Luckily Matt had been able to get her free. But then he’d gotten himself in trouble. They definitely need to find weapons of some kind, and soon. Alex fell to the ground but she regained her bearings and got back to her feet, looking around for anything they could use. It already wasn’t the best odds.
******* Seth knew that there was at least one vampire here as he had been on the network taunting people, which Seth found amusing. He didn’t think that they had to worry about a bunch of vampires trying to eat them for dinner. He wondered if 5-0 knew about this.
He was losing the battle with the vampire and a second one was closing in on him. Alex and Matt were not faring any better and if they didn’t think of something soon, they were all going to die. Seth glanced around quickly again, looking for anything they could use as a weapon. Suddenly, Seth found himself airborne again as the vampire threw him and he landed on something that cracked underneath his weight. The force of the blow stunned Seth slightly, mostly as he was starting to tire. When he saw the vampire approaching him, it’s fangs out, Seth rolled to his side to push himself up and he saw what he had fallen into. Wooden pallets.
Grabbing a broken piece of wood, he turned in time to drive it through the vampire’s heart as it lunged to attack. The next thing Seth knew, he was covered in vampire goo as the vampire disintegrated. “Oh man! This was my favourite shirt!” Picking up another piece of wood, Seth tossed it towards the masked man and telling him to use it before heading to Alex. With the still bleeding wound from her neck, she needed the most help. When he got over to Alex, he drove the piece of wood through the back of the vampire and it also exploded. “Two down.” Seth looked at Alex through all the vampire goo covering them both. “You alright?”
Matt was also struggling to keep the upper hand with these vampires. They were strong and they were fast. He was getting pretty banged up as the vampires kept catching him off guard and at some point, his mask had come off. Maybe if he could distract the vampires somehow, draw them away from Seth and Alex. As he was trying to formulate a plan, he heard a large crash moments. A few moments after that, he heard Seth complain about his shirt before something was tossed at his feet. Picking up the wood, Matt took out the vampire and also got covered in vampire goo. Disgusting.
Three down.
******* It was all happening so fast. It didn’t seem real. And it was traumatic, being bitten by some...vampire thing. Did that mean she was going to become one now? Because Alex couldn’t even deal with that. She didn’t even want to think of it as an option. She was dizzy and disoriented because she’d actually been bit, but she was never one to go down without a fight. They were faster and stronger, but now things had evened out a bit, and then some. Turned out Seth was a handy guy to have around when stuff like this went down.
She was stunned however when Matt’s mask came off. Matt Murdock was blind, how could he fight like that? She didn’t say anything because as far as she knew, Seth didn’t know Matt and she was sure he had his reasons for keeping the secret. But there was going to be a conversation about that later, if they all didn’t die.
Knocked to the ground by one of the two remaining vamps, Alex grabbed a piece of broken wood. She couldn’t fall apart. Not now. She was a survivor. That was how she’d made it so long, so far. She always survived.
She came up quicker than the vamp expected and though she was not thrilled about getting doused in vampire guts and God only knew what else, she knew what she had to do. She thrust up hard and fast into the thing’s chest and it exploded all over her. Terrific.
At least there was only one left.
******* Seth was concerned about the open wound on Alex’s neck. She definitely had to have that patched up. He wondered if she was going to turn now that she had been bitten. Had these been culebras, Seth would have known the answer but these vampires? Who knows. Maybe someone here would though.
Seth glanced over to the masked man and noticed that he wasn’t masked anymore. Seth didn’t recognize him anyways. The man was looking pretty banged up as well as covered in vampire goo. At least he was on his two feet.
Matt stood in the puddle of vampire, taking a moment to gain his bearings. By his count there was three vampires down. That meant that there was likely to be two pissed off vampires right now that they still needed to deal with. Matt looked around, listening for any sounds of movement, trying to determine where the other two vampires were. When he heard another explosion, he knew that Alex had taken out one of the two remaining vampires. He was proud of her. She was holding her own under the circumstances. Matt heard a growl behind him and he turned and rammed the piece of wood into the vampire’s chest, feeling the vampire disintegrate in front of him. Matt was pretty much covered head to toe in vampire guts.
Matt tossed the piece of wood to the side and made his way over to Alex. He knew that all three of them were scraped up and bruised but he knew that Alex had been bitten and he could smell the blood from her open wound. There was no trying to hide the fact that she now knew that he was a masked vigilante. There’d undoubtedly be a conversation about this later even if he did wish she would forget what she had seen. He was very grateful that she didn’t out him to Seth.
Seth was the first over to Alex’s side and he eyed the wound on her neck. “You need to get that checked out.” It didn’t look deep but it was still bleeding and that was concerning. Had he had a clean piece of clothing, he would have offered it to her to use to put pressure on the wound.
Matt appeared next to Alex. “Come on. We have to get you checked out at the hospital. You,” Matt nodded towards Seth. “tell people what just happened. Warn them about these vampires and how to deal with them. Be careful.”
Matt started to guide Alex away as Seth walked in the opposite direction and pulling out his phone.
