Barry could feel his heartbeat pounding in his ears, and it was going a lot faster than he was comfortable with. It normally hummed much faster than a normal human’s heart did anyway, but tonight, it was simply out of control. Nervously, he brushed back some of his hair as he stood overlooking the ocean on the wooden deck over the dunes. Why he was nervous though, he couldn’t really tell. Perhaps it was just meeting a pretty girl out on the veranda like this that made him nervous, though he and Rebekah were friends. It wasn’t like he didn’t even know her or anything. Still, she was a pretty girl in both of her bodies, and he was still that nerd Barry. Fastest man alive or not, girls still made him nervous. In an attempt to calm himself, he closed his eyes and leaned on the bannister, just letting the wind brush against him and tickle his cheeks for a while. Despite all the craziness and recent wide-spread violence in the city, this place was still a lot calmer than Central City in a lot of ways. Perhaps it was its close proximity to the ocean that made it seem like that. If things ever got too bad, all anyone had to do was head on over to the beach, sit on the sand, listen to the waves and feel the cool Pacific breeze in your hair. That would put even the most nervous of people at ease as far as he was concerned. And still… something inside of him yearned for his city. He wanted to be back there, to know what had happened after the black hole. Some part of him still blamed himself for this strange side story adventure in Hawaii. And when his thoughts grew too bleak, Barry forced open his eyes again. He didn’t feel as nervous anymore, though now a strange sense of foreboding was coming over him. He still had so much to learn about his powers, about the manipulation of time and space. He was so afraid to screw it all up, especially after the future version of himself had warned him against changing the past. What did that even mean? Wasn’t his future self changing the past anyway? Hadn’t the past already been changed by Thawne? It was all too confusing, even for Barry who prided himself on understanding all these complex things. That was why he had Cisco and Caitlin. And why he blindly followed Wells for so long. He needed people he could count on, people who knew what they were talking about, and it had bit him in the ass in the end, at least with Wells. A familiar voice coming from behind him pulled him out of his thoughts, and his heart began to hammer in his chest again at the sound. She was here, and the thought that she had actually come put a huge smile on his face. Taking a breath, he turned around to greet her and said a silent prayer to the gods of the time force that everything would go well. |
