The space around the park was unlike anything Teresa had ever seen. Despite being on the island for some time now, it was still hard to get used to the way everything was. She had briefly seen the Scorch when they had been “rescued” from the Maze, and the place looked like a wasteland. She could only imagine that the entire world looked like that. None of it, however, looked the way it did here, in the past presumably, in Hawaii. She had a lot of things to think about, everything that Thomas told her about, which wasn’t much really. And sitting on this park bench, surrounded by so much nature and life, was the the only way she was going to make sense of it all. She had to evaluate her life goals. As of that moment, all she had wanted to do was survive the Maze, to be free of it, with Thomas. To protect him. Those goals were still true, or at least the bit about keeping Thomas safe. They had been tricked and lied to, submitted to some sick trials, and it was hard for her to trust anyone. But she trusted Thomas. She always would… or at least she hoped she would. The sun was beginning to set by the time she came around from her line of thinking. It was incredible how much time could pass when one didn’t have to worry about surviving, where every single second mattered. She only hoped that she could consolidate her past, Thomas’s future and this present that existed before them. She couldn’t take responsibility for something she hadn’t lived through yet, but she could take the life that had been given to her now into her own hands. She could make things right. She had to. |
