Hawaii… Why hadn’t he ever been to Hawaii before? Oh yeah! Because he was dirt poor. That made sense. Well… he wasn’t exactly living under a bridge or anything, but after his father’s abduction, it wasn’t like it had started to rain money back at home or anything. His mom had to make do, and they lived in a shit town with a bunch of shit kids who were all bullies anyway. It had been a rough few years for a while there, but Sam had somehow managed to get through it. Then… everything with John started to happen. He couldn’t even really remember the beginning of it anymore, even if it hadn’t been that long since it’d happened. But so many things had gone down since then that the beginning felt like forever ago. One day, if he managed to make it out of all this alive, he was going to write a book. It was funny how he could think about that here, when they weren’t being pursued and persecuted by the Mogs. And sure, this creepy version of Hawaii had its issues, but those issues so far didn’t include the Mogs. And that was just fine with Sam. He could handle all the other issues (or at least he thought he could), but the Mogs? That was some serious shit. They brought with them the threat of death, and frankly, Sam’d had about enough of that. He was doing his best to ditch having to go to school. When you were on the run for as long as he’d been, school seemed so trivial. Had school ever taught him how to survive out there in the real world, being chased by Mogs, jailed and tortured? Definitely not. Maybe that wasn’t the real-REAL world, but it was Sam’s real world. And school had done a shit job at preparing him for that. He had taken to hiding out in the library during the days though. Maybe a boring place, but it probably wasn’t somewhere anyone would think to look for a kid ditching school. The arcades, the beach, the mall... anywhere but the library. Sam thought he was safe here ducking behind a couple of thick books that concealed comic books within. Maybe this place wasn’t so bad after all. |
