Kirito raced through the streets of the city, not even bothering to excuse himself as he went. He hadn't run this fast in a long time, certainly not since he'd been here in Hawaii. For as many evil villains that had appeared over the last few months, Kirito hadn't really felt inspired to help out that much. He'd done some mundane things here and there, but the police and all those other superheroes seemed to have things under control. Besides, he didn't want anyone questioning his abilities, because he might have had to punch out all their lights. How exactly did you explain that you were a badass swordsman but only in virtual reality? He really didn't want to get into that. However, when he saw Asuna posting over the network, something in him suddenly snapped. It was as if he'd been asleep this entire time, only to be woken upon her arrival. He hadn't wanted to think about what would happen if she'd gotten pulled here. He knew it was dangerous, and he'd been doing just fine on his own. But this was Asuna. His wife for all intents and purposes, the only person he would have done anything and given anything to protect. And here she was waiting for him in some apartment. In typical fashion, when Kirito reached the elevators to the building, they appeared to be taking forever. Why was it that things never happened quickly when you really needed them too? He tapped his foot impatiently and pressed the elevator call button a zillion times before he gave up and took the stairs up two at a time. He had to see her. Had to know that she was alright, that she was safe. The thought that he'd never actually seen her before in real life didn't even strike him until he was mere feet from her door, panting and holding his knees. Breathe, you idiot. There was no way he wanted her to see him like this, out of breath and so incredibly unlike a hero. He had leaned back against her door, just taking a minute to catch his breath. He didn't know what he was going to say to her, how he was going to react to seeing her again after all this time. How long had it been? Months to be sure. How had he even survived here this long without her? "Asuna..." He took in another breathe, steeling himself before turning around and lifting his hand up to her door. "I swear," he whispered to himself. "I will protect you no matter what." And then... he knocked on her door. |
