There had been plenty of times back home that Sydney had hated her job. Aside from the stifling, draconian culture of the Alchemists, she’d also had to deal with monsters day in and day out, making sure their needs were tended to so they didn’t decide to mingle with the general population. But here...here, things were even worse. There were no Alchemist resources to work with, no branches to draw support from. Monsters attacked every night, and other monsters fought them. And not just monsters: superpowered people. People with metal body parts. Unnatural, flying-in-the-face-of-all-that-was-good-a For that reason, Sydney tolerated them, but she wasn’t a big fan of them. It was her job, though, to keep track of things and ensure that the Moroi who were here were taken care of, no matter what her personal feelings were on the subject, so she’d taken a job right in the middle of the action. It helped her keep her finger on the pulse of things, but it also meant she had to talk to or, even worse, process these monsters as they came in. These days, Sydney spent a lot of days hating her job. At least the coffee here was good. Sydney hadn’t ever had Hawaiian coffee before - she was a fan of the Brazilian beans - but she had to admit Kona coffee had a rich, smooth taste she could easily get used to. She had a cup of coffee in her hand at the moment as she came into the precinct for work. Despite the heat that already suffused the Hawaiian air this early in the morning, she was dressed, as usual, in a full suit. Beige, of course. Buttoned up. All the better to fade into the background. In fact, she had apparently done such a good job of it that someone who came barrelling down the hall knocked into her, sending her coffee cup flying. Barry had come into the precinct to do his usual rounds of the place. He hadn't landed a job in forensics yet, but he was assisting the police in any other way he could, hoping that they would notice him and offer him some sort of position there. The truth was he was itching to get back into forensics. There was a tactile methodology to it that was almost comforting to him. To someone who constantly spent his days and nights zipping around the city at near-sound-barrier-breaking speeds, the precision and delicate nature of forensics was almost cathartic. He hadn't really been paying attention as he slipped through the doors, though at the last minute, something caught his eye just out of the corner. A movement of coffee flying and about to land on some poor lady. Without much time to react otherwise, Barry used his speed and rushed over to her. Time slowed down for him in a way when he was going this fast, so he had enough of it to grab a second cup in order to catch the coffee that was sure to spill all over her. It all happened in an instant, but Barry was able to catch nearly every single drop of coffee in the second cup before he slowed back down to normal speed. "Phew!" He said, and then, "Ouch! Oh..." A tiny drop of boiling hot coffee still managed to land on his hand, and he quickly slurped it up so that his hand would stop burning. "That was too close," he declared with a grin before turning to her. "You okay? None of it got on you, right?" For a moment, Sydney just stared. Time had seemed to slow down for her as well, as she’d watched her precious coffee fly out of her cup and right at her - but even faster than she could blink, there was someone there where there was nothing before, and he was holding a cup of coffee in hand. Her coffee. Which hadn’t splashed anywhere. She scrabbled backwards, until her back hit the wall, and her eyes were wide with alarm. “How’d you do that?!” Barry cleared his throat, suddenly feeling thoroughly embarrassed. He thought that just about everyone in this world knew about him. Even though he wore his Flash suit at night to ward off vampires and whatever other creatures that went bump in the night, it wasn’t so much to hide his identity but for the sake of mobility. Plus, his suit was fire resistant and had all those other little perks that Cisco had added in. So of course he was going to use it then. Still, he should have known that using his powers like that in broad daylight would kind of scare some people away. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you. I just… I was worried you were gonna get coffee all over you and…” He pressed his lips together, realizing he sounded pretty pathetic in that moment. “Uhm… Barry Allen. Also known as…. The Flash? Maybe you’ve heard of me. I have superspeed?” Shyly, he handed her back her coffee cup, wondering the entire time if she was going to maybe slap him or something. Sydney snatched it back from him. She might not have superspeed, but she was plenty quick in not leaving her precious coffee in his hands. "I've heard of you," she said, trying to keep her voice even. Good god, was no one normal around here? "I just didn't expect to actually..." She made some vague gesture, not quite sure where she was going with that. What she meant was that she was hoping she wouldn't encounter all the superpowered freaks that were running around, but she wasn't out to make enemies, and insulting said superpowered freaks was not conducive to a healthy and happy life here. “Oh! Yeah, I’m helping out Five-O with everything that’s going on.” He pursed his lips, feeling almost like she wasn’t digging his presence there in front of her. He wasn’t sure if he’d met anyone yet who didn’t approve of him having powers, mostly because everyone who knew had the fundamental understanding that it wasn’t exactly his fault. All Barry wanted to do was help people with his powers, and his safety was usually the only thing people who knew him were concerned about. And maybe the villains he’d faced wished he didn’t have powers either, but for other reasons. He dropped his arms to his sides awkwardly once she’d snatched her coffee back, unsure as to what he could do to perhaps salvage the situation. “I’m sorry. I don’t think I caught your name. Pretty crappy of me, right? I kinda just zoom right in here without really talking to anyone, so… sorry if I just haven’t had the time to stop and introduce myself.” "You still haven't," Sydney pointed out stiffly, neglecting to realize that she hadn’t offered her name either. She clutched her coffee cup tightly, her gaze darting around in a desperate effort to find some sort of excuse to get herself out of this conversation and away from him. She didn’t really need to know his name - okay, so maybe she did, because then she’d know who to keep an out for - so while she started sidling away, she wasn’t making a run for it. |
