The entirety of the previous day had been spent in the safety of his room, the door locked and any calls from housekeeping or any of the other general services provided by the hotel rejected with a simple, "Not today, thank you," from within. Cameron hadn't wanted to have to interact with anyone, not after being trapped in that elevator car with three strangers for hours on end, during which he had almost had more than one full-blown anxiety attack. Or had he actually had one? The fact that he genuinely couldn't remember was probably more telling than Cameron was willing to admit but that was just how he operated. He pushed things down and away as much as possible, he tried to hide from the truth, and when he couldn't? That was when he needed to be careful about just how his sleeves sat, when he needed to check the bathroom a few extra times before leaving the room so none of the staff would find anything telling. What exactly they would do if they did find something he wasn't sure but he was in no hurry to find out.
One whole day spent inside his room was enough and with the weather having improved the way it had Cameron had decided to actually venture out, book in hand, with the intention of finding somewhere quiet and secluded to sit and read in solitude. He was still learning the layout of the place and so when he wandered into what was widely known as the Serenity Garden he wasn't entirely sure where he had ended up, or that it was already occupied by someone else. Not until he caught that smell on the air, at least, and as quiet and reserved as he might have been Cameron knew that smell. Everyone knew that smell. Someone was smoking.
Sure enough, when he rounded a perfectly sculpted and meticulously maintained bush he saw the other man sitting there on one of the benches looking out across the desert none of them could cross to leave the hotel grounds. Cameron turned to look back over his shoulder, fully intending to back up and walk away before the other man spotted him. Where to go, though? Maybe he should have studied that map of the grounds a little better.
