“At any rate, I hope she learns before I have a murder investigation to handle.” It was mostly a joke, but the guests of the hotel whom Hayes spent his days concerned about were there because they were violent. And in some cases, it was bad enough that Hayes was sure they could kill the activities director without a second thought.
And it was partly that he really, really hoped they didn't kill her. She might have been pushy and a little annoying, but she was a person. And nobody deserved to die because she couldn't learn her lesson. It was why the hotel existed, really. So people could learn their lessons before the inner demons they fought destroyed them. A second chance at life after they'd learnt control.
He wrinkled his nose and prodded the rest of his asparagus with his fork. “Although, if she ever again asks me to participate in something where the words 'ballroom' and any form of the word 'dance' are concerned, I might do the job myself.” This was a joke, entirely, and he let the corners of his mouth go up a bit to show it. (It wasn't a proper smile, mind, in the way that other people smiled. But it passed as such for Hayes.)
