They watch Jack touch the doll and call it Teetonka. The name means 'talks too much' because the girl is so shy she uses the doll to talk for her. A joke among the adults. The stranger is called Jack by himself but the children like their name for him more. A girl points to Jack and says slowly. "Etchemin Jack." Canoe man Jack.
She points to herself. "Amitola." Then the other children. One by one. The boy is 'Patamon' meaning tempest. The small girl enamored with Jack is Kimi (secret). There is also Zihna (spins), Utina, and the other boy- Gad (juniper tree).
Now they've made a game of it. After Jack says each of their names they begin to point to things and tell him what it's called, waiting for him to say it as well. A man passing is called Enkoodabooaoo. When Jack says it they all laugh. A woman is called Makkitotosiew. When she hears this from Jack she gives him a heated and angry look before hurrying away. The children all fall to the ground laughing. The adults feel Jack must be retarded. He's getting away with pointing out a woman's large breasts.
Even the teenagers love him. Considered adults by now but still left out of tribe decisions, a small group of sixteen year old girls laugh as they watch Jack be used as a tool to cause chaos. They giggle behind their hands and try to hide behind each other when he looks at them. Mocking him, the girls bow and begin kissing the backs of each other's hands. One in particular seems to be the ring leader of the laugh at Jack sport. A striking girl that smiles full on at him as she flips her waist length hair this way and that.
