It's uncomfortable for Jack to be so far out of his element. He's used to having some basic knowledge of most cultures he comes in contact with. He is watching them all, though, and listening intently to every word they say. He's a rather skilled linguist and picks up bits of languages quickly. He's filing away words he hears more than once and defining their meanings by context.
He's glad that the crowd is dissipating a bit. They were making him nervous. He lets the girl braid his hair as long as she's gentle. Jack enjoys the feel of it, and was already being laughed at regardless, so why worry over it? He eventually begins offering to share his food with the girl telling him a story. It's actually a show of thanks. It's so much easier to learn a language from children because they're so expressive. To her, he probably seems to be quite interested in her story.
"An' what's 'er name, then? Name?"
Jack points at himself. "Jack. Jack." He then holds his hand out to her with an expectant expression, waiting for response.
