His miming of a hat gets more laughs. It's not mean or nasty but many tribes laugh openly at each other. It's only a cultural thing and they pretty much believe that if Jack is going to be offended by it be should stop being so damn funny. It's the children that understand him. A couple of them run off at full speed as Jack is still trying to explain what it is he wants.
The old woman goes between chasing people off and checking up on Jack to make sure he's chewing properly. A lot of the joke is that the woman has no children of her own left and has made it a habit of tending to every other person like an overly through hen. Now unfortunate Jack is taking up all her attentions. If he knew what they did he'd understand how hilarious it was. She tries to understand what it is he wants thinking Jack is asking for another kind of food. But when she can't fathom it she gives up and orders him to eat more, using loud sharp words and more hand motions.
Soon enough the children return with Jack's hat, belts, rings, animal skin, and compass. The compass especially was an endless amusement to everyone the few days he was out with bad fever from the mermaid bites. Jack came in and out enough to drink and eat but his things were faught over plenty when it looked like he wouldn't make it. One of the little girls hands the box over looking shy enough to just drop dead if Jack looks at her wrong. She's showing all the signs of being deeply in love. In the tragic way only little girls are capable of.
