After working to free the frightened mermaid, Jack is left face down and bleeding for his trouble. His limp form lays folded over one of the benches of the boat and one of his arms is bent back awkwardly over the side. Doing good always ends like this.
After a long while, Jack groans. He's displeased to be returned to consciousness when it hurts so bloody much. He lifts his head and it feels like it might split open. His vision is blurry, but he could swear he sees land. He squints at it and scrabbles weakly for the conch shell. He knocks the closed end against the boat until it cracks a little. He then blows through it with his hand in the opening, making a loud but awkward sound before the exertion causes him to black out again.
