RP: Being forced out of the house.
Who: Katie + OPEN
What: Katie's Mum has forced her out of the house, so she's going for a drink.
When: 6/2/98; evening.
Where: The Leaky Cauldron.
Warnings: Katie's in a MOOD.
Completion Status: COMPLETE

Liz Bell could be a force to be reckoned with. When she had stormed into Katie's bedroom demanding her daughter get up and do something, anything but continue to lie around like a lump, Katie knew better than to bother arguing. She had gotten her Gryffindor stubbornness from her mother, after all.

And so Katie had stood up, not bothered to shower or run a brush through her bright red hair, and left the house. She wandered for a bit until she settled on getting herself a pint. Katie had never been much of a drinker, but something about numbing her pounding head sounded like a good idea.

She went back inside long enough to grab her wallet and then floo'd from the Cambridge house to The Leaky Cauldron in London without a word to Liz.

Come to think of it, Katie hadn't said many words - to anyone - in the month since the Battle. Now that she thought of it, though, today had been exactly one month since the Battle, and that had Katie asking for a pint and a shot of firewhiskey as she sat. She still had a bright red mark on her forehead - she assumed from some sort of curse that had been thrown at her during the fight, but the mediwitch her mother had forced her to see two weeks ago said it didn't have any particularly dangerous properties to it, and that it would most likely fade with time.

She wondered if the nightmares would as well.

That was a thought for tonight, though, when she tried to fall asleep yet again, most likely to fail.

Looking around, she noticed families, couples, all getting on with their lives and still in a celebratory mood. It seemed so strange to her. But then again, maybe that's why Liz said Katie was depressed. Katie let that thought fall away with the others as she took her shot back in one go and asked for another before sipping on her bright, cool pilsner.

Alicia looked at the small pile of official parchments the Owls had dropped off to her during the afternoon. It wasn’t until now, when her shift was over, that she had the time to look at them. And boy, had she looked at them. Looked and read and still not fully comprehended what she was looking at. With the long shifts she had done every day for the past month – except for the days she’d needed off to go to funerals – she wasn’t really surprised that she didn’t fully understand, but… this? This was a lot. A lot a lot. Especially in a world that had thrown a lot at everybody for the past years.

Blinking away the tears, telling herself to suck it up and get going again, Alicia shoved all the parchments – will, marriage certificate, certificate of death, new identity papers, deed, bank records, vault key, all of it – into her messenger bag, not caring that they were sticking up and out every which way. Mostly she wanted to go home and pass out on her bed – as per usual – but tonight there was a restlessness that called for some sort of sedation.

From St. Mungo’s she Flooed to The Leaky Cauldron and once she had brushed off the soot, she headed for the bar, fully intent on starting with a glass of wine and then seeing where things went from there. A crop of familiar red hair had her lips quirk a little at the seams with relief that Katie was there and relief that Katie was here and not at home.

Not really sure if she should laugh of cry, she took the seat next to one of her oldest friends and signaled for Tom to bring her whatever Katie was having tonight.

“What did I just order?” she asked, foregoing all the standard questions she herself was sick of hearing these days: how are you doing? What’s going on? You need anything?

Katie was knocked from her daze when Alicia sat down next to her. "Firewhiskey and Pilsner, cold..." Alicia didn't normally drink hard alcohol, not that Katie knew at least. Then again, Katie didn't either. "Hi," she said, the word coming out on a breath. Ali looked tired, but Katie assumed she'd been at the Hospital non-stop for the last month.

A whole month.

A whole month had passed since Fred had died. Since Katie had watched her friends beaten and bloodied. Her thoughts started swirling again and just when she thought she might drown again in them, her second shot and Alicia's round were set down in front of them. She reached for the glass like a lifeline.

Firewhiskey and Pilsner..? Alicia pursed her lips and muttered a quiet “Hi,” back in reply. This night was already shaping up to be either memorable or completely forgotten – most likely the latter – but she wasn’t about to back down. Maybe Firewhiskey was what she needed, considering it was something she hardly ever touched.

As Katie reached for her glass, so did Alicia. “Just shove me in the Floo when I fall of the chair, yeah?” she said and without hesitation knocked back the shot and chased the fire with a long, refreshingly cold and crisp chug from her beer. Almost instantly, her arms felt tingly and the way her stomach was burning reminded her that maybe lunch had been too long ago, and maybe… she hadn’t had the dinner she had considered earlier.

Katie had more or less disappeared since the Battle, and though Alicia had stopped by, she hadn’t stopped by as much as she knew she should; she’d had to take care of herself, and by taking care of herself, she had hidden behind the need for Healers to help out with the bulk of injured now in the hospital. “Have you had someone look at that mark on your forehead?” she asked, remembering how it had looked immediately after the Battle, though also recognizing it as something lingering. Waving Tom back to them, she gestured for a refill of their Firewhiskeys and put in an order for a plate of Welsh rarebits and chips.

Katie cracked a sarcastic smile, the look odd on her usually sunshiney face. "I promise. If not me, I'm sure Tom won't mind." She looked up to the barman across the room.

She laughed at Ali's next question though, "I have. Mum had a mediwitch come to the house when I refused to go to Mungo's myself. I just needed sleep." For a month. She left that part off. "Mediwitch assumed it will fade with time, said there aren't any dangerous properties to it as far as she could tell. Do you ever turn the Healer in your brain off?" She was partly jealous of Alicia - her best friend had found her path in life and pursued it. Katie still had no idea what she wanted to do with her time or her life.

Alicia nodded, satisfied with the fact that Mrs. Bell had had a mediwitch check up on Katie. She could have done it, but there were some things that were just better handled by a mother. “I turn of the Healer!” Alicia claimed with a smirk. “But that doesn’t keep me from worrying about my friends. It’s what I do. Ange’s the bossy one, remember?” She picked up her shot glass and knocked it back, once again wincing at the burning feeling of the Firewhiskey as it went down. “Besides, would I have ordered Firewhiskey, Pilsner, Chips and rarebits if there was still a Healer in my brain?” Her voice was a little raspy from the liquor and she was blinking away the tears from the heat. “Not exactly a Healer-approved combination. Ugh.”

She took a sip of her beer to calm the heat, then glanced over at Katie. “Did you know I got married?”

Katie gave Ali a smirk and nodded her head dramatically, "She is indeed the bossy one. I wouldn't have survived Hogwarts without her half the time, though. And you the other half." She hadn't allowed herself to be grateful that her three best friends - Angie, Ali, and Leanne - had all survived the battle. The overwhelming relief would be too much for her, she knew. And to think of those they'd lost... She didn't attend Fred's funeral. She didn't get out of bed that day.

Did she hear that right? She nearly spit her beer out. "What?"! She asked, sputtering, her smirk having vanished.
