Popular culture had been talking about the dead coming back to life with a craving for flesh for centuries, in countless cultures, but no one took it very seriously... until horror fiction became a cruel, terrifying reality. It has only been a few weeks since the first outbreaks of the zombie virus began to spread across the globe, and the human population is already dropping faster than ever before. The dead are decimating the world, destroying all that humans have ever built. It has reached the farthest corners of the Earth and shows no signs of stopping.

The year is 2020. Can the human race survive or is this the apocalypse we have all been dreading?

Our story focuses on two very different areas of California.

Picture a once great, bustling city called Sawyer Beach. It is just off the coast of the Pacific Ocean on a small island, a mixture of poverty stricken outskirts, overcrowded urban cityscape and affluent beaches. It is one of the largest, most densely populated cities in California (similar to Los Angeles/New York) but now it is a feeding ground, packed tight full of people. The huge population of the once great city has backfired, making it a breeding heaven for the undead. No one can get in, no one can get out... Unless they cross the bridge.

When the outbreak was first televised, many people tried to leave the island to the mainland where a military base can be found. The bridge was soon packed to the brim with cars and passing military, everyone getting nowhere. It only took one infected person to turn the entire bridge into a panicked chaos. Soon everyone on the bridge, civilians and the military stationed there, turned or were devoured.

Across the bridge is a much more quiet, spread out city known as Redgrove. It is comprised mostly of suburbs and is a military town. There is a Naval base on the other side of town where many of the residents of Redgrove used to be stationed. The U.S. Army, Marines, Air Force, etc. came out to the Naval base after the outbreak hit to assist in the evacuation of Sawyer Beach and the nearby cities, and the extermination of the undead, but they weren't very successful. Much of the base has been overtaken by the dead, but some do remain.

Beyond Redgrove there are dozens of smaller farm towns that have become empty wastelands devoid of people. They are no-man's land, but beware of the many dangerous bandits that roam here. Like gangs fighting over territory and terrorizing civilians, they rule over the dead and the living, taking whatever they want and killing whoever gets in their way. However, many are started to leave the outskirts in an effort to find more resources, heading closer and closer to the bigger cities.
