No one wants to kiss me.
Who: Ios and Helena
When: Afternoon
Where: The deck on C-deck
Helena had been looking forward to seeing Iosef since leaving him the previous night. Luckily she was able to get out of the apartment now that the lights were actually on and the electricity seemed to be working. Thankfully her father hadn't felt the need to keep her locked in the room all day. She insisted that she'd be just fine and wanted to explore the ship some more, letting her dad know that she had Sundance with her if anything happened and reminding him she'd been just fine even when the power had gone out. She was a good girl, after all, he should trust her. Not that he would if he knew she was going to meet up with some boy he'd never met, but she neglected to give him that information.
Reaching the deck where she told Ios she would meet him, Helena found herself a seat on the bench and waited for the boy, hoping that he'd actually show up. Maybe he really did want to hang out with her and she wouldn't be disappointed, but the girl wasn't going to put too much hope into that. Boys didn't always want to be around the little blind girl and she really wouldn't have blamed him if he didn't show up. Still, she patiently waited to find out whether he would or not, her fingertips slowly running through the fur of her seeing eye dog. "Keep a look out, Sundance." she murmured.
Of course Ios was late. He had warned Helena, he was always late. This time, his alarm had actually not been set at all, Iosef had forgotten to do that the night before, which caused him to oversleep. Good thing Helena couldn't see him - well not good thing, per se - because that way he didn't have to spend too much time on his looks. After showering he threw on a pair of jeans, a wife-beater and some sneakers and he was off. He didn't even bother with his own hair.
Rushing through hallways to get to the elevator, and then rushing some more once the elevator landed on the C-deck, when Iosef finally spotted Helena and Sundance he was panting. He got to where they were and bent over, with his hands on his knees, regaining his breath. "I'm so sorry I'm late." He said between breaths. "I overslept. How are you?" He asked when he'd finally recovered and took a seat next to Helena.
Helena smiled in the direction of where Ios's voice seemed to be coming from. "It's alright." she told him. She could tell that he'd rushed to her, the sounds of his breathing rushed slightly with each breath he took. "I'm well. I was wondering if you were going to stand me up." she teased. "Come to your senses about the poor little blind girl." She could poke fun at herself quite easily now, having lived with her disability for this long. "My father got trapped in an elevator last night." she told him. "I had time to get a shower and read nearly two chapters before he got home."
Iosef gasped slightly. "I would never do that. To you, at least." He'd lie if he said he had never done that to anyone. "What's there to come to my senses about?" It might be a bit of a struggle but Ios was doing well not pitying her, and he actually liked her company. He cringed at the idea of being stuck in an elevator. "Jesus. Yikes. But hey lucky you!" He said with a grin. Of course then he gained a little bit of conscience. "He's okay now, right?"
"I don't know." Helena said, shrugging lightly. "Not every guy - or girl for that matter - wants to be spending all their time with someone like me." she said. She was used to the only friends she could get being her father - who, though she loved him, didn't really count as a 'friend' - and the blind people she went to school with. They shared her disability so they didn't feel like they were missing out on activities because of her. Sighted children, however, did feel like they were being left behind if they were unable to do things all because of Helena. "I mean, you could be doing all sorts of other things on this boat than spending your time with me." she pointed out. "Yeah, he's alright. I think that he was more worried about whether I'd gotten trapped too. He's such a worrier." she sighed.
Settling himself down next to Helena, Iosef looked at her as she spoke, and then shrugged. "I think you're a pretty good person to spend time with, and anyone who disagrees can go suck off a donkey." He said, grinning. "True, I could, but I'm not here on gunpoint. And it would be really easy to ditch you, if I wanted to, but I didn't." He explained, still quite chipper. "Your dad has a reason to, though, being trapped in an elevator is kind of a big deal. My little brother got trapped last night, poor guy."
Helena's eyes went wide when Ios said what he did involving a donkey and for a moment she just stared in his direction. Finally a little laugh escaped her and she shook her head, flushing a terrible shade of red and lifting her hand to cover her face. "Oh, that's gross." she told him. "Eww." She felt better that he said he wasn't there at gunpoint. She wasn't forcing him to hang out with her, so there was that. "Well... I'm glad you came." she told him. "I was hoping that you would. I had a good time hanging out with you last night."
Not even Helena's reaction was enough to embarrass Ios or make him wonder if he needed a stronger filter around people. When she laughed, he limited himself to laughing with her and agree that indeed it was gross. What he didn't tell her, however, was that due to many a trip to Tijuana with his friends, he'd seen a few donkey shows in his day. Instead, he grinned. "Me too, you're cool. So, what should we do or talk about?" He asked.
Helena, though she didn't know it, was quite glad that he didn't elaborate on donkeys or what he'd seen girls do with donkeys. "Anything." Helena smiled. "Whatever you want to talk about would be just fine by me. I told my dad I was going out so I've got plenty of time to do whatever you want."
"Tell me about home." He asked, for lack of something better off the top of his head. He leaned against the bench, legs sprawled out in relaxation, and it took him a little bit of restrain not to lean his head against Helena's shoulder. "I've never been to Australia, I want to know!"
"It's beautiful." Helena told him. At least what she remembered of it from her sighted part of life, it was. "There's a little bit of everything. Desert to water to fields. It's like the best of everything all in one place. The toilets flush backwards." she chuckled. "So that's probably different than what you're used to."
Giving a chuckle at the idea of toilets flushing backwards, something Ios had heard of but wasn't sure was true, he was suddenly reminded of all the wild and dangerous animals that were said to exist aplenty in Australia. "Is it true about the spiders and snakes? That they just sneak into your house just like that?" He was no pussy, but damn it if Arachnophobia hadn't done a number on him - especially since he'd last seen it while high.
"Some do." she admitted. "Depending on where you live. But there are bugs everywhere, and spiders. I don't really like spiders. Even if I can't see them, I can remember what they look like and the feel of them is even worse than the way they look." Helena admitted. "It's really gross and creepy crawly. I'm such a girl when it comes to things like that."
He wasn't going to tell her, but the thought of feeling a spider without being able to see it almost made Iosef want to cry for brief moments. Rubbing her arm soothingly, Iosef cracked a smile. "Awww. It's normal, nobody likes to feel spiders walking on them or around them." Did they? Not anyone Ios had ever met, he supposed. "What about sharks? There are sharks, too, right?" Australia really did seem like the most likely place to get owned by nature.
"I like that though." she told him, eyes flicking in the direction of his arm and wishing she could see those fingers as they brushed across her skin. She imagined it though and hoped that her imagination was as good as reality probably was. "Yes, there are sharks." she nodded. "I don't really swim much so I don't worry about them. My dad would probably die if I wanted to go out in the ocean."
Iosef tilted his head. "Like what? The spiders?" He was confused there for a moment, and briefly he wondered if she was saying she liked the feeling of his hand across her arm. But probably not. No, she wouldn't say that kind of thing. Would she? Anyway... "Yeah, I can imagine." He snickered. "Even I don't think I would swim down there. Not that there aren't sharks in America, obviously."
"No." she said, grinning in his general direction. "No, I don't like the feel of spiders. I like the feel of your fingers on my arm." she told him. "They're rough, but not in a bad way. Different than mine. Not nearly as weathered as my father's. I like that." she explained. She wondered if that would make him feel weird, but she hoped not. "Sorry. Maybe that sounded bad. I hope I don't offend you with liking you touching me, as awful as that sounds."
Good thing - kind of - that Helena couldn't see, because Iosef's reaction to what she said was to widen his gaze dangerously. Of course the clearing of his throat and deep breath taking were still noticeable by her, so that wasn't a good thing at all. He hadn't been expecting her answer to be that. "I uh...I can leave it there, if you want." He suggested sheepishly. Of course she wasn't offending him, quite the opposite in a weird, unexpected way.
Helena smiled again in his direction. "You can, if you want to." she told him. "I don't want to force you into something you don't like." she teased, her grin widening just a little in a teasing sort of fashion. "So, do you like touching me, Iosef?" she asked. She knew she was flirting and maybe she just wanted to see if he would nervously laugh or explode or something like that.
The whole way she was talking to him, the question she had asked, these wre things Iosef wouldn't expect from her in a million years. And they were leaving him nervous. Batting his lashes as he regarded her in silence, Iosef saw her attitude as a green-ish card to be a little less cautious, like he'd been so far. Shrugging, Iosef pulled Helena to him and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, leaving his hand to drop over her forearm in the process. "Okay then. This is much better, anyway." He said, grinning.
She was a bit surprised when he pulled her against him, but she didn't mind in the slightest. "I agree." she said, leaning into him a little more and letting her free hand move up to rest over his fingertips. "You're warm." she murmured. "And you smell really nice." she went on. Which was probably weird, but it was all she could say because 'you're cute' just didn't really fit when the girl couldn't see.
Iosef chuckled at what Helena would say about him, although part of him was kind of nervous and still getting used to this turn of events. And that was unusual, because if there was something Iosef didn't get around girls, was nervous. "You smell nice too, actually." He said, as he had smelled her hair for a little while before.
"Thank you." Helena said, taking in the sound of his laughter. He sounded just slightly nervous and she wondered what was going through the boy's head. "Are you okay?" she questioned. "I didn't say something wrong did I?"
"Okay? I'm damn fine." He said, running his fingers over her arm again as he hugged her tighter. If she was okay with this then the whole damn world was fine right about now, and Iosef was loving it. "Don't worry, I don't think you'll ever say anything wrong." He reassured her.
Helena drew in a slow breath, taking in the way that Ios smelled, the way he felt against her and the way those fingers felt as they moved along her arm again. "Good." she smiled. "Wouldn't want to scare away the only friend I've made on this trip."
"Couldn't scare me if you tried, doll." He reassured her again, his voice soft and soothing as his fingers over her arm. He had ran out of things to say, but for some reason Iosef supposed it was okay. If they sat there in silence it wouldn't be an awkward silence at all, he didn't think. So, because trying to find something stupid to say seemed like the worse option, Iosef just sat there quietly, appreciating Helena's company.
She grinned at that and lifted her hand to still the fingers that moved over her arm, letting her hand find his and twining her fingers through the boy's. "Good." she said. "I'm glad. I'm kind of partial to you by now."
Iosef snickered. "Only partial?" He asked, feigning disappointment when it was a really good thing to hear, better than nothing. He definitely wasn't used to this. Good thing this vacation would end eventually and they might never see each other again, because he just didn't know if he had it in him to be like this for a long time. So far so good, though, and he was enjoying himself and Helena's company. No need to ruin it.
Tilting her head up a little, Helena smiled at Ios. "More than partial, but again, not wanting to scare you off. You're sweet though." she told him. "I like having you around, even if it'd probably scare the bejezus out of my dad." Helena admitted.
Fair enough, Helena had the right idea. Smiling, Ios squeezed her towards him. "So are you." He said, a chuckle escaping when when Helena mentioned her father. It figured, Iosef might not exactly be one to take home to meet the parents. "We just won't tell him." He assured her, grinning mischievously.
Letting the hand that wasn't holding his move up across his chest, she caught his cheek and gave him a big grin. "Oooh. Gonna be my dirty little secret?" she teased, biting her lower lip.
"It's high time you have one, princess." He teased, with a light-hearted chuckle. "That, and some ice cream. You want some ice cream? I think I could go for some." He suggested. Not that just sitting there hanging out wasn't good, but doing it with ice cream was better.
"Mhm." she nodded. "I think it is time to get a dirty little secret and I think I like the idea of you being mine. And ice cream sounds wonderful. Lead the way?" she asked, grinning at him again.
Snickering, Ios pulled Helena away to stand up. "Yeah well, I'm a lot of people's dirty little secret." Especially because when most good girls went wild on Spring Break, they went really wild. Taking Helena's hand in his, he waited for her to stand up before leading the way to the nearest place where they had ice cream. Which he had no idea where it was, but who cared? They had time. "C'mon. You too, Sundance." He said, calling Helena's dog to him to see if it worked.
Sundance gave Ios a look that said 'you're not my master', but with Helena following along after him, the dog had no choice and came along, taking his place at his master's heels. "A lot of people, huh?" Helena asked, her fingers twining through Ios's. "Why's that?"
Iosef couldn't quite blame Sundance for the reaction, but calling him had been more out of instinct than actual logic. Of course the dog wasn't going to obey some dude. At Helena's question, Iosef's mouth curled into a smile of mischief and he didn't say anything for a while. "Well, I, uh..." Now he knew what he said next could potentially affect this 'thing' he had with Helena, which meant he needed to choose his next words carefully. "I've been known to be, at times, a bit of a slut." He finally blurted out, scratching his neck.
"So you've been with a lot of girls?" she asked him. "That's not so bad. I haven't ever been with anyone. That's lame isn't it?" Helena sighed. "I haven't even kissed a boy. What's it like to kiss someone? On the mouth with your eyes closed and the smell of them surrounding you? Is it wonderful?"
Shrugging, Ios smiled. "It's not lame." He said simply, though the questions Helena asked next had him a little bit on his toes, and pressed for answers he had to think about. "Yeah, it's pretty damn wonderful." He said after a while. "It can be almost magical sometimes." He considered, as they walked. "But I don't know, I think maybe it's different for you, somehow." He concluded, nodding.
Helena smiled a little at that. "No one wants to kiss me." she admitted. "People, unless they're blind too, don't really even want to talk to me unless they have to." Helena told him with a little sigh. That admittance made her stomach feel a little queasy. It wasn't fair, damn it. "Maybe someone will want to kiss me someday."
"I don't know, Helena, that's a little hard to believe." Iosef told her, squeezing her hand. "You're pretty awesome, blindness and all!" He complimented, pulling her close to him by her arm. "And I'm sure tons of people want to kiss you right now." He said in a slightly fainter tone of voice, still smiling.
She flushed a little at that. She liked that he didn't seem to mind her being blind. He hadn't once been mean to her about it. "Like who?" she murmured, unseeing eyes flicking in the direction of his voice. "I think you're wrong about that."
Iosef smiled, but didn't answer right away. He wouldn't mind kissing her. Were it anyone else, and he would have already, he knew as much. And then he thought if it wasn't some form of discrimination not to be his usual self just because she was blind. Not that Iosef was thinking of having sex with her and then spend the rest of their trip avoiding her, because that was a bit much even for him. But that they could have some fun before this trip was over...there was no denying that. So, and with this logic in mind, Iosef tugged at Helena's hand and twirled her around until she was facing him, mere inches away. "I do." He almost purred, running a thumb over her cheek before leaning in to kiss her. Now this was Iosef, no discrimination.
Helena blinked a little when he whispered that he would and pulled her to face him. His fingertip was brushing over her cheek and she could feel how close he was to her. Was he going to really kiss her? She could feel his breath on her face and then, then there were his lips against her lips and the tiny little flicker of a smile quickly disappeared into the kiss as she let those unseeing eyes close to take it all in. The soft little noise she made clearly said that she didn't mind that he'd kissed her. In fact, she really hoped he'd keep doing it.
That Helena hadn't pushed him away was a good thing; not that Iosef really thought she would, but there was the possibility. As far as he was concerned, he had done his best to provide Helena with the best first kiss she deserved, and he smiled at the soft approving noise she made, though he didn't deepen the kiss or let it last too long. That could scare her. Pulling away a little, he smiled broadly. "Well? What did you think?" He asked, his hand still cupping her cheek softly.
It was too short. Or maybe just right but she'd just wanted it to last for longer. Helena smiled and finally opened her eyes, letting out a little breath. "I think that was wonderful." she murmured, the smile widening even as she spoke. "Really wonderful."
Filling himself with pride, Iosef smiled widely at Helena's choice word for the experience, choosing to believe it was largely due to his own actions that it had been so wonderful. "Good." He said, unable to hide said pride in his voice as he pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. "That was my belated Christmas present to you, by the way."
"Thank you." she murmured, leaning against him. "Guess I'll have to find something equally wonderful to give you, huh?" she grinned. "What to get, what to get?"
Iosef shrugged. He wasn't hard pressed for presents at the moment. Twirling her around, he put his arm around her shoulders and started walking. "You'll let me know later. Now, ice cream, right?" He reminded her, grinning.
