This was supposed to be the easy part, relocating the people they’d been able to rescue from Azkaban. Unfortunately, the ‘easy’ part was also the most difficult. It wasn’t as dangerous at least not directly, but it was the hardest to watch people try and sort themselves out now that they were no longer locked inside those walls, and in truth, inside their own minds. Without dementors there, they could think clearly, now it was the hardest part for them. With the Bones safehouse quickly becoming overcrowded even with extension charms, Mary offered many of those rescued safety within her ancestral home. It had the Fidelius Charm on it making it a safe place to leave them to recover.
It was a sight for her to see many faces she hadn’t seen in what felt like years, many of them having been captured at the start of the war in 1996. It was a stark reminder of the days they were living in, a life that was so much like what they faced during the first war. It was that reason alone that Mary continued fighting even when the cause, at time, seemed on the edge of failure and even when they did fail at the Battle of Hogwarts. The cost of really losing, of giving up, was too high a price.
Once she had the occupants of her home settled, Mary had her elves begin preparations for them to have meals, after that, she decided to take her leave. They needed time, all of them, and her there fussing over them – a lot of them grown adults, would only make it worse. Instead, she walked a good distance from her home and apparated from the grounds. She wanted to ensure that no one would find it. Even with the Fidelius Charm, Mary didn’t want to take the risk of someone finding the property. The last thing those people needed was to be returned now that they were free.
Where did Mary go? The one place other than her family’s home that she knew she was safe. Also, the one place that felt more like home, anymore. Even with all the moody children running about it. Mary walked through the halls until she found what she was looking for. “You can’t adopt them all you know,” her tone was teasing and gentle as she spoke.
