To whose who actually knew him, it was pretty obvious that Rook was struggling with his emotions. He was struggling with the intense need to keep people at an arm's length so they wouldn't make him vulnerable, so he wouldn't be affected when (not if) they died. His father had always been there so he was different, and of course he couldn't do that to Susan, they were all each other had left. Everyone else was supposed to be separate. At a distance. The more people he cared about, the more vulnerable he would become, the more distracted from his mission of revenge. Dax had been a lost cause for a lot longer than Rook would ever admit, but back in France it had been easy to ignore. The danger there was only run-of-the-mill criminals they were more than capable of handling. But Death Eaters were another monster entirely. They were mean and sadistic and had a complete disregard for anyone who didn't worship them--and apparently they liked cutting people open. That had been the event that made Rook aware that he was never going to not care about this idiotic man, which you might think would make it easier to embrace their friendship, but in reality, that made it harder. Or perhaps it was the girl who made it harder. She certainly didn't make things any easier. She was the anchor that guaranteed Dax would never take himself and leave, no matter how dangerous it goes--as evidenced by the fact that he was not trying to go home even after almost dying. Having never been good at actually feeling his feelings, Rook's usual reaction was to get angry and pretend they didn't exist, but clearly that wasn't working for either of them because now they were both upset and really needed to have a conversation that Rook didn't know how to have. Even still, he leaned against the wall down the hall across from Dax's room, arms crossed over his chest, until the girl noticed and left them alone. He waited a long moment before actually going inside the room. "You don't look like you almost died," he said, not knowing what else to say. |
