Oakdell wasn't much of a step up from Milton, but Clint would take it. He was glad he wasn't back at SHIELD, on the bench after the incident with Loki and the mind control he'd been put under. It still made him paranoid, wondering if that bastard had a backdoor into his head and could come along and flip a switch to make him become a mindless drone again. When he'd been compromised by Loki, it was still him, but without the free will to stop what he was being ordered to do by the trickster god. He still wanted to put an arrow through the bastard's eye socket, but he was glad he didn't seem to follow from Milton. Then again, he wasn't even sure he'd still been there in those final days he'd spent in that sleepy town in Illinois, but it didn't matter. He wasn't here in Oakdell and he didn't have to worry about becoming some asshat's puppet. All he had to worry about was the rest of the Avengers thinking he'd gotten compromised, because none of them remembered anything from Milton, despite how a good chunk of them had been there with him. It was what made the situation complicated, because he couldn't prove to them that he was telling the truth and that led to him becoming a recluse for a little while. He'd hide away in his home, out of the view of the others as he observed the town and tried to get an idea of what they were dealing with. Clint wasn't stupid, he might not be a genius like Stark or Banner, but he had a vague idea of what was and was not right. The fact that the locals just up and gave things to the new arrivals? That was not right. But it was one of the only things he'd found, so that led him to wondering if Natasha found anything. Outside of the party at Steve's, he hadn't seen much of his partner and that was probably a good thing. He was trying to disconnect the Natasha of Oakdell from the last one he knew, just to save things from getting awkward and this was the real test. Asking her to meet him at the bar when she was free and, after making him wait around for it, she finally had a clearing in her schedule for him. It was funny, having to actually check with her to find out when she was free. Outside of their separate missions with SHIELD, it wasn't like him to really have to ask her much of anything. He was her partner and they knew each other well for a reason. So this self imposed estrangement was weird for him and he was gonna fix it. While he waited for her, he ordered a beer. Whatever they had on tap, because he didn't care. It was mostly so he'd look like his usual calm, collected self rather than tense, like he was coiled up and in need of a break in that tension. Even still, he kept alert, as always, knowing that there was a good chance that she'd just find a way to test him by sneaking up on him when he least expected it and making him look like he'd gone soft. "C'mon Natasha..." he muttered, as he took a sip from his beer and began to mess with the bowl of peanuts in front of him. If he had a pen, he'd probably be drawing on a napkin, just to pass the time while he waited. Now he was sure she was testing him. |
