She had insisted as soon as he had woken up that they needed to go to the gallery. Several messages had been left and a long, devastating sounding apology from the owner of the security company he had hired. None of those employees had stayed through the day like they were meant to and Ash needed to come. Not thinking anything of it, he had dressed slowly, frustrated that he couldn't simply bask in the success that was the showing last night. He wished, looking through the doorway of the gallery, that he had dressed quicker.
If his heart still could beat, it would have stopped. He would have dropped to the ground dead. At first, he was hopeful. Maybe it was just the first room and they found what they wanted and left. But no, room after room confirmed his worst nightmare. Each painting was shredded. Each sculpture was smashed. Everything was destroyed and he didn't know why. But that was only the first floor. He had no time to mourn the loss of his old paintings. Those were inconsequential but the ones above... Surely not. Surely.
He was, unfortunately, very wrong. Even the works above were destroyed - Hell, whoever they were had even shredded poor Emma's drawings. It was incredibly thorough. But he ended up on the ground in front of the ruined portraits, utterly devastated. His assistant had been scrambling to keep up with him, her own easy-to-enthrall nature had her wanting to sob but needing to be strong for her master.
"My phone," he held out his hand. She fished it out of her pockets and handed it to him. For a long moment, there was silence as he wrote and then he handed it back. He had neglected to hit send so she added a private request of her own and then pressed the button for him. "Gather... Lists. Everyone who attended. Everyone who displayed. The photographs. Call the insurance company. And leave me." She nodded and scurried away as Ash lay down on the ground and remained there, silent, still, staring.
