Photos after photos of grisly bodies of ghouls—the terrible state of them that they were left in at the scene—accompanied the pages worth of write up and official Hound reports were what the Council was currently staring at in a stupefied silence. They were, all of them, old enough to have seen this type of work and recognise the sigils engraved into the walls and the bodies. But it wasn’t everyday, and it certainly wasn’t something they liked being confronted with.
Micah cursed the Sheriff, not for the first time that day, for not even having the decency to show up for what was already turning out to be a massive headache.
Vincent was quiet, looking worried, which frankly wasn’t far from his usual default. Marceline, for a Toreador, seemed disturbed by the pictures. Sethius, for a change, was quiet. And Maya, of course, was nowhere to be found, sending only a proxy in her place, giving more fuel to the rumours of late that the Malkavians were soon to replace their damaged leader.
“Hunters.” That was Sethius, unsurprisingly. Always had to be the first to voice his opinions, even if what they knew at the moment was still not a lot to go on.
“Yes, I suspect the St. Leopold’s.” It fit their style. And more importantly—”They’ve been active, recently.” Micah didn’t have to elaborate, the other Primogens knew that if there was activity on the ground, especially in Manhattan, Micah would be the first to know of it.
“And you want us to release this to the rest?” Marceline sounded scandalised. It wasn’t difficult to imagine where she came from. As long as they continued to sweep everything under the carpet, the veneer of normalcy continued. Toreadors could pretend that there was nothing wrong. Their parties could go ahead as scheduled.
Micah leaned further back against his high-backed chair, seated directly across Sethius, who still looked like he had tasted something rancid. “It will get out, eventually.” If it had not already. He and Julian had reached the scene on time, and he had exhausted every effort to try to keep the news fenced in from the scene. But with Shrecknet up and running, there was simply no guarantee. “Coming from us, we can still be in a position to advise them on what to do. If it comes from any other source…”
“And this is why, the Net should have never—”
“Oh give it a rest, will you?” Marceline interrupting Sethius was not a novel thing. But Micah couldn’t help wishing the woman some tact.
Watching Sethius’ rapidly purpling face, Micah cleared his throat. “Do we have a consensus, then?”
“What does all of this mean?” This from the Malkavian representative, a bland-looking sort of fellow who at the sight of all the other Primogens present turning to focus on him now that he had spoken up, seemed shocked and overwhelmed that he’d spoken aloud in the first place. “I- I mean, they haven’t been active for a long time. And now of all times…”
Micah considered that young face. Perhaps there was hope for the Malkavians yet.
It was Vincent who answered, surprisingly insightful. “It means that we have to be very careful. We have more enemies now than we’ve had to face together before. The slightest misstep could be devastating for us.”
And despite Vincent suddenly sounding like he was taking lessons from Maya. Micah had to say that deep down, he was inclined to agree.
