Ash & Rook
There was both relief and extreme frustration with the fact that he couldn't escape the arms surrounding him. He knew that he couldn't go in, that he had nothing to offer, but... One of his oldest friends was trapped inside and he couldn't imagine not trying even as Rook held him back, begged him to stay in a way that only Ash understood until he couldn't fight any longer.
Huddled against Rook once they were settled on the bench, he was trying to fight for language, words, as tears poured down his sooty cheeks. "Ana is in there," he managed to croak - and it really was croaking. The words were barely understandable. And he knew she'd be in there until the end. That was just the way she was. His stomach hurt from sobbing. Blood was dribbling onto his chin. Ash clung to Rook, an island in storm.
