While the memories of Maya Dethanatos had been broken and shattered, what she once knew was out there, floating amongst the strings of the cobweb waiting to be found. Pieced back together. Julian had been in her mind and held now in his own the fragments that remained. There would be no putting the Malkavian Primogen back together with the way that she had once been but he could dig into the cobweb and see if he could pull out the other pieces and put them together in his own head.
Hopefully, it wouldn’t break him the way it had Maya.
Or at least break him more than he was already.
He had done been shattered once. Twice. The mirror smashed to the ground and broken, the pieces getting smaller and harder to put back together each time. But he had agreed to do this and he done held the pieces of what remained of Maya’s memories so it made the most sense for him to do it even if there were older, more experienced Malks who might be better at this.
So at the request of the Sheriff, Julian had settled in to try and find the missing pieces of the puzzle. To grab a hold of the piece of the web that was Maya’s string and follow it. It didn’t take him long until he hit a problem. Her string splintered into hundreds of others, broken and splintered just like her own mind was. He’d have to follow each one if he was going to be able to learn anything. Sometimes he would head down one just to have to come back to the source and started all over again.
Minutes. Hours. Julian didn’t know how long he spent picking and unraveling the mess of strings. It wasn’t all for nothing though. The pieces came. Most disjointed and out of order.
Maya’s hand writing a note. If Lucian stays Prince then it will mean the end of New York. He has too many supporters here. I don’t know who to turn to. I need your help as an outsider to stop what is to come. Now she just had to get it where it needed to go so it could reach the one it was intended for. Ariel Lee Underwood the name whispered across her mind.
Another piece.
This was all wrong. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. Thoughts that passed Maya’s mind as she watched a vision unfold in front of her though it was hard for her to tell the difference between now and the future. The building she stood in front of was burning. Kindred were trying to escape the inferno that was swallowing up the building. Most never made it past the flames. Those that did make it out found themselves cut down by men in black gear. It was hard to make out the letters on their black vests as the flames burned brightly in the night. They had been found
Then another.
Maya staring down at her hands that were still covered with the blood of a man she had considered a friend. She hadn’t wanted to do it but he had been so much stronger. His words had wiggled into her brain like worms and she couldn’t get them out no matter how she had tried.
Back and forward and words echoed across the thread.
”This isn’t what I meant when I asked for help,” Maya cried out. “We can’t just kill Alex! He’s done nothing. If anything he’s a neutral party in all of this."“I can not help if there is not a place for me here in New York. No one is going to listen to the outsider who holds no power here. One must be made and I can do more as Primogen. As Primogen you have me by your side to remove Lucian and fix his mistakes before it’s too late. You do want to stop it don't you?”
The man she faced still appeared faceless in the memory, the web unwilling to give it up just yet but that voice. Julian knew that voice all too well. Cold dread was starting to settle inside of him.
A hand stroked over Maya’s face as she sobbed. She didn’t even consciously call up the use of blood to do so, they just happened. “I didn’t want to do it. How could you just make me do it like that? To kill him?””Not to worry. Once I get done you won’t remember. If anything lingers after will all just seem like a bad dream. Now,” the man knelt in front of Maya and for the first time his face came into full clear focus,”forget.” The full force of Domination slammed into Maya as the Ventrue started to pick away at her memories.
Julian saw nothing more. He had lost ahold of the threads the moment those dominating words had slammed into his mind and he had fallen out of the chair he had been sitting in from the pure force of the memory of them. That and the knowledge of that face. He didn’t need a name from Maya’s memories because that voice
Dorian Valatieri.
That was why he was in New York without anyone knowing about it. Why Julian was in New York. All so he could pull the strings and murder a Primogen so he could make himself one. All he had needed was for someone to open the door and invite him in.Maya had given him that invitation. Had opened that door. Had learned the hard way that some devils you just didn't make deals with.
Julian sat on the floor for a while, trying to piece himself together before he finally picked up the phone and made two phone calls.
