This was starting to be the worst year already. 2006 started in a wonderful and awkward way and just went downhill almost immediately. The first match of the year saw two of her players acting wildly out of line. The legal work was still piling up from that. Easily months of work was ahead of her. She had been on the verge of putting out requests for interns when this past weekend happened. Four critically injured. Three more almost in the same condition. She had too much work to not look at in order to get another person for her office. She almost didn’t leave today but she had decided on drinks, and her precious intern reminded her.
Drinks. With many of the staff from the other teams, as they all really needed a break. It was that time of the year again when the world seemed to move too fast for their people to keep up. But it was agreed upon, and really started with the same person who started the year off weird. Strat. She honestly could not recall much conversation between them before the New Year’s party. In fact, she probably wouldn’t talk to him if she knew it was him that night. But the conversation had been wonderful, and he was very kind to her. Really, it was an experience she had never really had with a male in her life outside of friends she knew from school. Even then, they did not always start on such a strong footing. She knew it, she was a loser back then. And she still felt that way now. But the way he talked to her and laughed, it was like he had enjoyed her company. But he didn’t know it was her, and really, she was okay with that. Mostly.
Mostly, because she was scared to find out he would change knowing it was her. A silly notion, yes, but it was something that came with years of hearing she was not important enough from her peers. All the same, he was kind and she wanted to be his friend, even if she would always have that uncomfortable feeling in her chest, knowing that he was really her first kiss in years. But she showed up to the Three Quaffles. It was quiet, as most Tuesdays were, and she was glad they picked that day after all. She spotted him at the bar and took a deep breath. She found herself really wanting Jamie with her, but they had said staff only. A few other people from other teams were there as well, but she felt compelled to at least say hi to him first. So she stopped behind the stool to his left and offered a small smile. “This seat taken, love?” she asked a little louder than she had spoken at New Year’s.

Strat was under the impression that he needed to go out and ‘socialize’ more than just at events where just about everyone seemed to show up. He couldn’t help it, he’d been married to his job back when he worked as a Hit Wizard, and very little had changed as he worked through his new career. He was the youngest head of security that the Magpies had, and probably the youngest in the league (though, Jasper really didn’t have that much on him if truth be told), and he was determined to prove that his age had nothing to do with anything. That and he really did just love what he did. It challenged him, and gave him a deeply satisfied feeling when he got home at the end of the day. That and if he didn’t feel like socializing, he could blame work and be safe for the night. It gave him a security blanket that he could opt for and none of his closest mates would really give him too much shit about it. Not that Strat tried to make it a habit. But it did happen from time to time.
But it seemed that this function seemed like it would be a good idea, and he said he would be there, so he was. Simple as that. Just because he liked to hide sometimes, didn’t mean that he wasn’t a man of his word. Because in his eyes, if he wasn’t a man of his word, he was nothing. So, as soon as he got off of work, he ran home to shower and change before showing up at the Quaffles and saying hello to a few people before parking himself down in a seat over a fresh lager. He turned when he as being spoke to and shook his head. “Only if you want to occupy it.” he said in a friendly tone. He. Would. Be. Good. And. Socialize. Which meant talking to people he might not normally talk to. Yes. Branching out. It apparently was a good thing.

Once more, Megan felt that blush creeping over her darker features and the small smile tugging at her lips. He was just being lovely, as he was at the party and she knew it. Still, it was a wonderful thing to not be invisible to people outside of school friends and work. Then again, this was work-related, regardless of how much she had started talking to him since the New Year started. But she thanked him quietly and took her seat. After ordering and receiving her cognac, she smiles at him again and fought not to focus on that night. This was new. She wanted to see a friendship come out of that conversation she had with him, even if he was oblivious to who it was under the mask. “I’m glad you made it,” she told him honestly before relaxing a little.
She was surprised to see so much of the turn-out, especially with the final push to the finals about. Her own team was in the pits with so many of their players injured, including the main reserve in the hospital. On top of that still sat the legal issues with Bole and Warrington. No more thinking about work, this is all about fun, she thought and took another sip. “Hopefully work has been tolerable this week, yeah?”
----
“Wouldn’t miss it.” Straton responded with a small smile. He was trying to be in a good mood about everything, this week had sucked pure and simple. And the fact that last he’d done things that he usually condemned others for doing...mainly the fact that he’d gone out, gotten very drunk, got himself arrested and then all but begged Jasper to come and bail him out. How the hell he got away with nothing against him, he wasn’t sure. Probably because the guy who had taken him in was his old partner when he was still working for the Hit Wizards. Part of Straton hated himself for using connections like that, but on the other hand, he usually didn’t. At all. Not for himself at least. And at least this way maybe his sister wouldn’t figure out that he’d acted like an idiot based on what was going on. Probably the last thing she needed right now. He’d make up a story about why he had a giant bruise on the side of his face later. Blame the probies, or something. “It’s nice to be at a party and not feel like I have to babysit the players.” he said with a bit of a teasing tone to his voice.
Before responding he took a sip from his lager and shrugged a bit with his right shoulder. Bad idea. Still store. Though, thankfully, he didn’t really flinch it was more just an awareness that, yup, he was an idiot last night. “It was what it was. Can’t really complain with all things considered.” he said with a bit of a sympathetic look. “Everyone one the mend over there?” he asked. He’d tried to keep up with it the best he could, but it was mostly hearsay. He wasn’t overly close with that team, so he thought giving space would be a necessary thing.
------
Had anyone told her that Strat was this kind, she would sought him out faster to talk to. But Megan always saw him as a rather unapproachable and stand-offish man. Maybe it was simply his demeanour. But this was worlds different, and she liked the way he smiled. It made her feel really comfortable. “Well, I’m glad all the same,” she replied with the small smile. She noticed that he seemed off, but she also (unfortunately) heard of the rumours about Cassie’s boyfriend. megan was never one to listen to rumours and gossip (having had too many things said about her in her past), so she didn’t pay much mind. Of course, the idea of Strat going off and picking fights drunk seemed so far from the man she was getting to know. “I agree to that, indeed.”
“Well, we can but it will get us nowhere fast,” Megan took a sip of her drink before frowning slightly and looking at the glass. “They are all awake now, which is a deal better than earlier, yes.” She was worried about them, and it made her have a difficult time focusing on the worst parts of her job. Still not sure how we will make a full team for Saturday, she thought gloomily. With barely enough players out of the hospital for the practices this week, she had been very aware that they may need to forfeit the next match if they did not have enough people, but she refused to tell Michael that it may be for the best.
