Sabrina wasn’t sure how it happened. One minute, she was smiling, laughing, having a good time as she helped to work on the new playground and the next her hand was stuck in the swing. It all happened really fast and the details were a blur in her mind when moments later she finally got her hand free. Nothing broken, she didn’t think, but there was a nasty cut on her hand and it was throbbing really painfully. Really, really painfully. Sabrina actually had to bite down on her lip to stop from crying and that made her feel so much younger than she was. Gently cradling her injured hand, she moved away from the swings and had a look around. Conrad was here somewhere and she hated to bother him, but she knew she should have him take a look at it. She didn’t think she’d broken anything, but she also knew he’d be angry with her later if she didn’t say anything and it turned out to be something that needed healer attention. *** Conrad was finishing up his treatment of one of the other volunteers knees from where they’d scraped it on a piece of wood, biting down on his tongue the entire time to keep from losing his temper with them over making such a big deal out of something like that. Really you’d think they’d cut a limb off from the way they’d been carrying on about it. He forced himself to smile as he said “There you go. Your knee will be fine.” Really what he wanted to say was grow the hell up and quit wasting my time with this nonsense, your knee wasn’t even bleeding. He turned around and saw Sabrina, grinning as he raised a hand to wave to his friend before seeing where she was holding her hand like it had been hurt. He cussed under his breath and made is way over to her. “What happened?” he asked, holding out his hand for hers. *** “I don’t really know,” she answered honestly. “I was working on the swing and I guess I caught it- I’m not even really sure how I managed it, it all kind of happened fast.” Gently, she laid her injured hand in his so he could examine it, wincing slightly, because it still hurt quite a bit. In spite of her discomfort, Sabrina got a mischievous twinkle in her eyes a moment later. “Really, I just wanted to give you something more interesting than a skinned knee to deal with,” she teased. She’d seen the last “patient” Conrad had been working on and even from a distance she could tell there hadn’t been anything really wrong with them. Sabrina couldn’t help laughing a little at that. She felt guilty enough bothering him over a cut. If it hadn’t been so deep and painful, she would have just bandaged it up herself and left him to people who really needed a healer! *** Conrad had mastered the art of half listening to patients while examining them during his time at St. Mungo’s before becoming a healer for the League. He glanced up at Sabrina when she mentioned his last patient, grinning when he saw that twinkle in her eyes. “I’m pretty sure I treated children who whined less than that guy.” He turned his attention back to her hand, poking it gently. “How bad does it hurt when I do that?” He was trying to tell if anything was broken before he did anything about the cut. Heal from the inside out. Plus if there was anything broken, he’d need to get them back to his office since he’d left the majority of his things there. *** “Ow!” Sabrina cried out before biting into her lip to stifle the sound. She didn’t want to seem like a crybaby, herself, even though she knew her cut was a lot deeper than any scrape that guy had gotten. And she knew she needed to be honest with Conrad so he could treat her properly. “A little. Not that much,” she admitted. Pain was kind of relative. That had hurt less than when she’d broken her toe, but it still hurt. So, a little seemed like a fair description of how much. “I still can’t believe I did this. I feel like such a klutz.” First a broken toe and how a cut hand. They were just going to stop letting her go anywhere at this rate! *** Conrad looked up at her when he heard Sabrina cry out. “Sorry. I needed to see if anything was broken. It was the easiest way with where we are right now,” he told her apologetically. “Good news nothing seems to be broken,” he added giving her a slight smile before turning his attention back to her hand. He pulled his wand out of his pocket, pointing it at the cut and muttering a quick spell to clean the wound and seal it. He’d used that spell more since coming to work for the team than he ever had at St. Mungo’s. “You could always try to convince people the swing bit you? I’d back you up on it.” He teased her. *** “It’s all right,” Sabrina assured him. She knew Conrad hadn’t been trying to make it hurt more and sometimes that whole examination process did cause a little more pain, but it was worth it when the relief came later. That’s how Sabrina felt when his wand moved over her cut. Her features smoothed, all trace of discomfort gone from her expression as the pain faded. “Brilliant,” she breathed, moving it around a little and smiling as she found it felt much, much better. Sabrina laughed when he suggested they spread a story about the swing buying her. “Right, that would be really believable, I’m sure,” she joked back. “Those swings can turn downright rabid, I’ve heard.” *** Conrad had to admit that seeing that look on a patient’s face when he’d helped them was the best part of his job. Knowing he’d helped someone. It was why he’d gone into the field after all - to help people. “I’m glad to hear that,” he told her, slipping his wand back into his pocket. He held his hand out for hers, wanting to examine the wound again and make sure it was completely sealed (and that he hadn’t missed anything). He couldn’t help but laugh along with Sabrina. “Don’t get me started on how vicious the slide can be.” *** “You’re a miracle-worker, Conrad.” Sabrina might be biased, considering they’d become friends in the time since they’d both started working for the Magpies, but she thought he was a brilliant healer. She was certainly grateful for him quickly taking care of this injury, anyway. Obediently, she held out her hand for him again so he could re-check her hand. It felt better than it had a moment ago, but she knew he would want to be sure she was fully all right. “Oh, I know,” she agreed, carrying on with the bit he’d started there. “Those things are terribly dangerous, they’ll swallow you right up and then spit you back out. It’s brutal.” *** Conrad just grinned at her comment. “It’s easy when I’ve got good patients. Plus Jason was a big help when I was studying. And if you ever tell my brother I said that I’m going to deny it. Just so you know.” He winked to show her he was just teasing. He trusted Sabrina not to tell Jason what he’d said. Not that it would matter if she did. He checked her hand again, lightly pressing on it and watching her face to see if there was any wincing or other sign of pain. “I think it’s good,” he told her letting go of her hand. “Then there’s the monkey bars. Just waiting for the right time to make you lose your grip. Honestly, they’ve got parents fooled. Thinking they’re safe for kids to play on. It’s a real shame,” he told her trying to keep a straight face but failing. He heard someone calling for a healer on the other side of the playground and he sighed. “Want to bet it’s another scraped knee? I’m going to need a drink after today. And I’m going to try to convince Tristan to buy it.” *** “Your secret is safe with me. Sabrina’s expression was one of mock seriousness as she made a buttoning motion on her lips, but there was an amused sparkle in her eyes as she played along with his teasing. This was one of the reasons she liked Conrad. Their senses of humor were pretty well in sync. He was a great healer, too, whether he’d had help learning it or not. He was good, even at the parts they couldn’t really teach. Sabrina laughed at the sound of someone else calling for a healer and shook her head. “I think it would be a very bad idea to take that bet,” she teased. She didn’t envy him his job the least little bit. “If that doesn’t work out, come find me and I’ll buy you a drink,” she said as she waved him off. It was the least she could do to think him. *** “Thank you” Conrad told her, forcing himself to look serious for a minute before breaking into another grin. He could joke around with Sabrina in a way he couldn’t with some of the other people he knew. She was a good friend and there were times, like when he saw her injured that he thought of her almost like a little sister. “It’s a deal. After this you and me are hitting the pub. Either on Tristan or we just alternate buying the rounds,” he sighed and turned to face the direction that cry had come from. He grimaced when he saw the man sitting on the ground glaring at him, holding one hand over his elbow. “Oh joy - it was their elbow,” he said. “I’ll see you later Sabrina,” he waved at her before walking off, putting on his best Healer’s face as he got close to the man and looking over his injury with concern. |
