It was a perfect summer day, hot and sunny. Billy could remember running through the spray of the Frog Pond fountains as a little kid. So what if it wasn't a real pool? Judging by Ty's reaction as they approached the park, the seven-year-old hadn't outgrown the thrill of splashing around in knee-deep water just yet.
"Be good," Billy told him, probably unnecessarily, but the words had to be said. He wasn't one of those parents who just let their kids run wild. Billy picked out a park bench to lounge on while Ty scampered into the wading pool, quickly merging into the crowd of shouting, splashing girls and boys.
Billy gave up on trying to follow Ty's progress and just sat back, legs stretched out in front of him, one flip-flop clad foot crossed over the other. This was the life.
