Jack Martin enjoyed getting the family together on a somewhat regular basis. He was aware that the family dinners weren't viewed with all-round positivity, but the fact that his children more often than not managed to show up was testament enough for him not to fret over this. He knew they weren't the most smooth sailing family around and he wasn't oblivious to tensions between the siblings (or between his children and himself), but the fact that they all got together under one roof to share dinner and discussions did mean a lot to the now 68-year-old ex-chief of police.
His birthday had passed fairly uneventfully, as they tended to do. With the workloads down at the station, Jack hadn't felt the need to pull his children away for the sake of celebrating his chronological advancement, feeling that the family dinner would do just as well if there was any celebration to be done. He had intended to purchased a cake for the occasion, nothing too fancy, but his daughter had more or less forbidden him to do so, saying she's bake one. Alex had also offered to come over earlier to help him prepare the food, an offer he'd happily accepted. Most of the things that were to go on the table were done and there was a tray of cheese and crackers prepared for anyone who wanted some before they all sat down for the main meal.
There was no saying how these gatherings would go. Sometimes they worked out fine, sometimes less so. All Jack could really do was to hope for the best - his family being together.
