Did you know when you go It's the perfect ending To the bad day I was just beginning...
Nick had always counted his steps when he ran. He didn't know why, nor did he know what purpose it really served, but he'd always done it. Not to amass how many steps he'd run; he'd always stop at four and restart the count again, so it didn't really serve any purpose other than to clear his mind.
One, two, three, sixty eight, he counted, pausing for a second to take a long pull from his water bottle and then started up again.

Maybe it would have been easier if it only happened once, but it had happened twice. And twice shouldn't have been enough for him to develop feelings, but it was, apparently.
And this is why you should never get feelings involved in shit anyway. Too messy. Why'd you even do it to begin with? It goes against everything… ugh, why are you still thinking about it?! He shook his head to clear his mind. One, two, three, seventy six…
