"You have the same look I did when I first got here." The tiny blonde commented to the man, who looked more than a little confused and maybe more than slightly pissed off. She couldn't blame him, really. She was pretty pissed about this whole thing, and she'd been here a couple of weeks now. There was nothing she could do so far though, so being pissed off was not productive. Hopefully the new guy here would learn that soon too. He'd be better off. "Veronica Mars." She introduced herself, as she made her way over to him. She could have added Attorney at Law, but she hoped that was only temporary. It bored the shit out of her. She belonged in the mud and muck of Neptune's seedy underbelly. She was helping people there. Here, well she'd made some copies and fetched some coffee so far. Nothing super exciting. "Welcome to Test City. No one really knows how we got here, who is responsible, or how to leave." She figured it would be best for him to know he was probably in it for the long haul from the get go. Veronica didn't see much sense in sugar coating things, it wasn't like he was ten years old or anything. "But, I've been worse places." **** Steve turned at the sound of a woman’s voice. He had been surveying his surroundings, feeling both confused and pissed off at the idea that he had been abducted. He looked the tiny woman over as she approached him. “What kind of look is that? The look of being pissed off?” “Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett.” Steve introduced himself, sticking his hand out for the woman to shake. He didn’t have to add his title before his name but in the case that they were being watched or listened in on, it’d do his captors well to know just who they were dealing with. Steve crossed his arms, listening as Veronica explained the situation they were in and he appreciated that she wasn’t sugar coating things. He respected that she was talking straight and to the point with him. He gave a soft chuckle at her comment of being in worse places. “You and me both. How long have you been here? How many people are here? Our captors haven’t made themselves known yet?” --- Veronica shook his hand. Obviously this was a Navy guy, a SEAL if she had to guess. Keith had some SEAL buddies and they were hardcore. She wondered for a moment if she should ask if he knew Logan Echolls. But people here seemed to come from different places, even though that made no sense. Perhaps she'd ask him later. "I'd say it was nice to meet you, but no one likes being kidnapped." Veronica said. And if she were really honest, she might even say this wasn't her first experience of being sort of kidnapped. No, the pint sized pain in the ass that stood before the Commander was basically a trouble magnet. Wallace and Mac had as much as said it, more than once. "No one has taken responsibility yet. We're all just supposed to live here contently." Her tone would probably let him know that for her, that was kind of impossible. "Been here a couple weeks now, guess that's when it all started. But the resources it would take for mass kidnapping and containment on this level?" Veronica shrugged. "No one I know, or know of, could pull something like this off." She really wished she had better news for him, he seemed like a good guy. But he needed the truth, not a bunch of false hopes. "On the plus side, there is a bar and the beer is cold." --- Steve’s hand envelope the woman’s tiny hand, impressed with her firm hand shake. Chuckling again as she said that she’d say it’s nice to meet him but nobody likes being kidnapped. “I can’t say that this is the first time that I have been abducted. Unfortunately for our captors though, I don’t plan on being content about living here.” Steve said as he glanced around again. He wasn’t panicking. He was definitely confused and more than pissed off about the situation but he would keep his cool. He needed a clear head in order to process and find a way to make this place work to his advantage as he worked to find a way home for himself and the other victims. Steve couldn’t help but give a raised eyebrow as Veronica told him that she has been here for a couple of weeks now. It all seemed quite unreal and she was right, it’d take a lot of resources for someone to pull this mass abduction off. “How often do people arrive here? Are there any noticeable patterns?” He started wondering if there was a pattern to who was abducted. Did anyone have any ties to each other or things in common? He also wondered if his team members were here. On one hand he hoped not because he’d rather them be safe at home but on the other hand, they worked best together and together, maybe they could figure this place out. But, if they weren’t here, had anyone noticed his absence? He couldn’t blame Veronica for wishing she had better news for him. He would likely be relaying the same information to new abductees at some point or another. He appreciated receiving the non-sugarcoated truth. “Good to know about the beer. I may be needing one soon.” Looking up at the sky, he pointed at the green hand that was above them. “And what’s the story behind this?” --- It wasn't hard to determine the kind of guy Steve McGarrett was. It was a skill she happened to excel at. The way he carried himself, like he was in charge. Whoever he was, he was really important back home probably. But Steve had a way of doing it that didn't come off as pompous. And Veronica definitely appreciated that. Lots of people liked to treat her like she was twelve and underestimate her, and sometimes she used that to her advantage. But Steve didn't seem like one of those people anyway. "I don't think any of us are actually too content about it, to be honest." Veronica said. There was just nothing they could do about it. That was the most frustrating part, she thought. They had to sit here and let whatever was going to happen play out because there was no escape, at least not right now. Veronica did not to do well with sitting still, and she had a feeling the Commander didn't either. "People are arriving all the time." She said. "Sometimes in small groups, sometimes just one or two...some people seem to know one another but as of right now, there is no pattern I can discern." Mac would have probably been better at that, but she wasn't here. "We're all connected through the network." She told him, shaking her head a bit. "I haven't used it much...but if you want to talk to some of the others here, see what answers they might have, it's your best option. When she looked to where he was pointing, Veronica shrugged. "I don't really know. I've been trying to ignore it...it's well outside of my comfort zone. Like something out of a bad sci-fi movie." ** Steve was a take charge kind of guy. He always had been. He was a problem solver and he didn’t like sitting idle when he could be doing something productive. In this case, it would be working to find a way home. The woman in front of him may be tiny but he liked the way she spoke frankly with him and he had learned a long time ago not to underestimate someone. “Well my friend back home says that I can be a pain in the ass and I fully intend to be a thorn in our captors sides. Once I figure out who they are that is.” Steve glanced down to the his care package that still remained at his feet as Veronica explained that all of the residents were connected through the network. "I definitely will check it out. Listen, thanks for stopping to help me out. I appreciate it. Maybe one day you will let me buy you a beer." The Commander grinned. He wasn't for a date but Steve had a strong sense that this woman was trust worthy and worth having as an ally in this strange place. *** Veronica laughed at that. It had been said that she could be a real pain in the ass too. They were going to get along just fine. She figured she was more of a pain in the ass than he was, but time would tell and all that. She hadn't really talked to many people here yet, so she was kind of glad she could change that, welcome the newbie so to speak. "I mean, they'll have to reveal themselves at some point and gloat. Isn't that what the bad guys do? Monologue us to death?" For as much as Veronica could joke about it, this whole situation had her deeply concerned, and of course worried about what was going on at home. It wasn't productive to worry, but the petite blonde was only human. "Not even going to card me?" She teased. Most people thought she was younger, she'd been dealing with that since she was a teenager. It was kind of a running joke now. She felt inclined to let him in on it, besides he seemed like a guy who could use a laugh or two sometimes. **** Steve didn’t think that he was a pain in the ass. It was Danny who thought so but Steve just did what he had to do to get the job done. Which most of the time left him listening to Danny lecture and chastise him about his decisions. Steve nodded. “It’s my experience that is exactly what will happen. I do find it interesting that nobody has claimed responsibility yet. I wonder what they are waiting for.” Steve’s mind was still swirling with theories and questions. He looked at Veronica and could tell that she was worried. She may have thought that she was hiding her worry it but it was written all over her face. Steve reached out and put a hand on her shoulder. “It’s normal to be worried. It’ll be okay though. I’m going to try my hardest to get us some answers. Just stay safe...or at least don’t take any unnecessary risks.” Steve laughed as Veronica’s teased. “You do look young but I think you are a smart woman. I doubt you’d be telling me that you engage in underaged drinking.” He grinned, stooping to pick up the care package at his feet. “I need to check out my new home which has been provided by our gracious hosts. Mahalo for the help Veronica. If you need anything, let me know.” |
