Peggy was one of two people still alive that had known him before the transformation into Captain America. She'd seen him, even when he'd been barely 100lbs soaking wet, riddled with illnesses. Doctor Erskine had seen too, believed in him, but he'd died before he had been able to really see what Steve had become. Bucky was the only other person alive who'd seen him as Captain America, even when he'd been nothing. Having the body to match the will had been a blessing, but it'd been a long road to find himself comfortable in his skin. "I try to only change as much as the times demand," he replied. "Though there's a couple of ways the times have finally changed to fit with the kind of equality I was fighting for since the day I was born."
Steve lauded all of the social advancements, and thought he was well aware that the path was not yet finished, the world would get there. Eventually, everyone would be equal, no matter their race, religion, gender, or sexuality. There would always be something, but Steve still held hope that he'd see true equality before he eventually died.
Peggy's admission that it was Howard who'd been treason surprised him immensely. Howard was many things, but a traitor to his country? Not a chance. Certainly not willingly or knowingly. "I'm glad you were able to get him sorted. I'd say the government changes, but it doesn't. Not really." SHIELD was slightly different, but the truth was, even HYDRA had infiltrated them. The Avengers were capable of being better, of being closer to what Steve had envisioned of the Howling Commandos on a global scale, but there was always a risk with an organization that large. At least with the Avengers, he had a much more active role in running it.
"I see you again, back home," Steve replied warmly. "But for now, we have this and that's more than either of us could've hoped for." He smiled. "I'd be happy to introduce you to them. I think you'll like them a great deal." Particularly Natasha and Ms Potts, though Steve kept that tidbit to himself. He didn't want to color her opinions anymore than he might've already. "I run the general store in town. Have you also been similarly employed by Test City in some way?"
