Steve had felt restless until the Battle of New York. It was a hard pill to swallow, but being at war, fighting battles, that was all he knew. Except this time, he didn't necessarily trust his team. The Howling Commandos worked because they all had their roles to play and they always looked after each other. Barton and Romanoff worked well both together and separately, but more than that and it got a little dicey. They preferred to either work alone or be paired together, Steve knew. Tony Stark also preferred to work alone, though while he balked at direction, he did follow it. The commentary was something Steve could do with less of. Thor knew how to work with a team, he was just used to leading it. Steve understood that, too. It wasn't perfect, but the potential was there.
"Of course," he replied, his cheeks coloring slightly from her kiss. Once upon a time, Steve had been able to picture the war ending, him and Peggy settling down with Bucky taking the house next door. He could've spent time working on their home while she continued on her military career, though he'd no doubt eventually find his way back into the willing arms of the US Government. That was all just a vague memory now, something he'd made peace with after the Battle.
He chuckled. "I can't imagine it does. But knowing you, whoever it was probably didn't actually commit treason." Steve gave her a knowing look. Whoever she'd been helping, they had to have deserved it. "I wish I could be there for you. That we could've had a life together." He reached for her hand, giving it a squeeze. "I know all of this is overwhelming. I spent a couple months destroying more than a few punching bags. I know what it's like. I also know that it gets better. Easier." Steve smiled encouragingly. If anyone could handle this sort of thing with grace and poise, it was Peggy Carter.
"I can introduce you to my friends, if you'd like. The ones that are here, at least. It might prove useful if this place is anything like the last place Ms Potts said a couple of us were in." Tony had said something about bald eagles and nests, but Steve thought there was a joke in there about his patriotism, so he ignored it. Bucky would be a secret though, for now. There was too much at stake for him to get his hopes up too much.
