The man jumped a little when he heard the female voice, and from the look written across Simon's face it was clear that he had completely forgotten that she was even there. Confusion took over the look of surprise when he listened to her speak, and after a moment of consideration the odd man nodded his head. "Of course your name isn't Gunther, since that is a male name...strange that you would introduce yourself with a name not your own first, but if such is the local custom then who am I to argue." There was no duplicity in his eyes, confusion sure, but the man appeared to be sincere when he spoke. "My name isn't Rhonda, it is Simon, and it is nice to meet you Karen not Gunther." With a warm little smile his gaze returned to the book once more.
Without thought he continued to eat from the can, seemingly enjoying the food for a second before Simon heard her speak up again. The mention of his can was met with a little frown and furrowed brow as he glanced down at the contents of the tin. Rice, lamb and gravy...a delightful meal served at room temperature to be sure. In truth he always thought it a good day when he managed to scrounge up a only mildly dented can of dog food. Still her words seemed to be spoke out of concern and not rudeness so Simon did his best to focus. "Oh, bread balls. My uh, apologies if I offended you...I know it isn't as fancy as deer guts and pine needles, but the dog food is only a dozen or so years past the expire date. Still quite good."
With a few marbles missing it took him a minute to understand exactly what she was talking about, but with a backward glance towards the food court lines Simon just slowly shook his head. "Thank you for the kind offer, Gunther, but the food there just seems so wrong. Haven't seen fresh anything in nearly...huh, can't seem to recall when it was, but it was before the nukes fell for sure." Another soft smile touched the corner of his lips as Simon's eyes moved back to his book, and after savoring another spoonful the man quietly hummed to himself once more.
