Sean had been a great sport about watching Dodger. Their pup was doing great adjusting to their new house. The place wasn't huge -definitely not on the same level as Sean's Malibu home- but it was comfortable enough for the pair of them. Holden was thrilled with it, especially considering the lease price and the location. Loveless Park was quickly becoming one of his favorite places in Test City. It was nice to have a place where he could run or walk or hike without worrying about getting mugged or being too far out of reach in case of an emergency.
Emergencies were something wholly different inside Test City, too. Neither he nor Holden had ever seen an alien invasion in their lives. Both of them would have laughed at the idea prior to their arrival. Holden was taking it one event at a time, one new individual at a time.
The diversity in Test City was enough to keep him on his toes. He'd met many gifted members of their society as well as an alien who came from a more advanced civilization. Their world kept getting bigger the longer they were in residence. Holden hoped he got the chance to represent the transplants in court so he could try his hand at advocating for an entirely new species. It was something he'd like to have the memory of for his life's history.
Cook outs were the kind of thing people who lived in suburbs did. He'd decided to go for it, invite people out, have a welcoming party for their new house in their new city. Sean was on board. They had rented some tables from a party-planner in the mall along with enough chairs to make it look as if they were having a concert or a rally instead of an open house. Holden had covered the tables with festive red fabric tablecloths, set up a serving table with blue napkins and white silverware to make it all very patriotic feeling. He had enough to feed fifty people without stretching their limits.
They would take turns at the grill. Dodger was on a lead line which allowed him to run back and forth in the backyard. He wouldn't get loose, but he'd get to enjoy the day outdoors. He was friendly enough to where neither of them worried about their guests being injured by him. Holden was paranoid about his dog anyway. He wouldn't leave the puppy alone to be handled by complete strangers. It was going to be a swap for them from the front lawn saying hello to the back lawn where there were more tables set up for guests.
As they got everything ready to be served, Holden smiled at Sean and laughed, "I hope we didn't buy all this for nothing. Here's hoping people show up! Welcome to the neighborhood, Test City!"
