Sam's brows rose slightly, that didn't sound like it was that far off from her own world. She'd injected John with chromosome 24 to make him into a supersolider so that he could beat the Imps and then Sarge.
What was it about corporations wanting to create things that they shouldn't? It was for the money they'd gain of course, Sam wasn't an idiot, but still they'd meddled in things that they shouldn't have. Sam had only wanted to know about the science, about how the chromosome worked. She didn't know they were experimenting on humans.
Frowning, Sam reached down to rub down the side of her leg. "That sounds familiar. It wasn't a virus where I'm from, it was an extra chromosome that was found in the remains from our dig site." Her hand kept rubbing over her leg, "My team was just studying it, we weren't --" She shook her head, and then let out a long sigh, "I didn't know they were testing it on humans." Sam had believed the best in UAC, it'd been her nativity that had gotten so many people hurt and killed. John had tried to warn her, but she hadn't listened to him.
"It turned some into monsters, which is what we believed wiped out the civilization we found on Mars. For others though? It turned them super human. I believed it had something to do with their souls, or the core of their personality which determined which way they went. Those capable of true evil were the ones that turned into monsters, the others didn't." She'd banked a lot on that theory, but it was exactly that; a theory. "It was a theory, one that I'd rather not have to try and deal with again."
Unless John showed up, then she'd have to keep an eye on him to make sure, but deep down in her heart, Sam knew he was good.
She didn't want to think about what it meant when the one Imp had shot its tongue into the room after being trapped. She wouldn't have pegged Duke for being a bad man, so if it wasn't after him? It must've been after her.
"I miss him a lot. Though we were separated for a long time. He wasn't happy that I went back to Mars, and I wasn't happy with him either." She chuckled, "I'm not technically a Martian. I was born here on Earth. Next year to be exact." She gave Alice a small smile, and lifted her shoulder. "Traveling back in time before your birth is really strange. I don't even know how I feel about it."
