Everything was different on the front lines. Soldiers who came to the front of any battle knew they were there for one of two reasons: they were the most likely to survive the onslaught or they were expendable as collateral damage. Caine Wise had been the runt of his litter and an albino strain to top off that damning trait. He had always been sent to the front. It was nothing to him to risk his life for the lives of others who were worth more than he was because he felt blessed to have been allowed to live.
They could have destroyed him, cut their losses. His makers had sold him for a loss to the Legion. The Aegis had accepted him as someone who could be used for worst case scenarios. No one had expected him to excel at anything. It had been no surprise when his unwanted factors had been exposed in his genetic code after he'd attacked the entitled. Killed the entitled. He'd been a murderer who had been forgiven only because he was also an asset.
Flying over the main town center of Test City, Caine was grateful he had his wings back so he could be of use once more. The Queen was safe with Thea. That woman he trusted. She was a good human, the kind worthy of being entitled. He might speak with his queen to see if she would offer her a titleship. It'd be well-deserved. He took aim at a creature coming up on a woman fighting. She was fighting for all she was worth, he could tell that from the air.
"Behind you, coming in to cover West and North as long as you keep up East and South? Yes?"
His wings folded neatly behind him as he started firing, clipping off limbs before firing up his shield to bash a creature he'd taken down. It crushed easily under his cybershield. Caine had killed more than his fair share with that shield. He'd no qualms about crushing an enemy if it saved an ally.
"Caine Wise. Guard to the Queen of Earth, Skyjacker with The Aegis. Pleased to make your acquaintance, comrade. I will not let you be overwhelmed today."
It wasn't a hollow promise on his part. Caine was the best man Stinger Apini had ever fought with and he wasn't even a man. He'd fight until his last breath for the woman he loved. Jupiter needed him to keep as many of her people alive as possible. This soldier would make it off this battlefield even if he himself did not.
Caine fired again, pushing off from the ground with his boots to skate across gravity. There wasn't flight involved in the boots as much as a reversal of gravity. It took special skills to operate them with any comfort. Jupiter had taken to them as if she'd been born with wings of her own. He wouldn't let her down. Skating over the air, Caine fired rounds into as many of the enemy as he could, snarling at them as he dropped low enough to blow away limbs. He'd created a gap in his directional points. It was the best which he could do under the circumstances.
