"I'm used to making people uncomfortable, not the other way around. I'll be glad to give you a warning, Peggy. Thank you for your kindness."
Kindness wasn't something often offered to the soldier. He'd gotten to the point where he knew his place. There were people with purposes and there were purposes with people. He was of the latter persuasion. No one treated him human any longer except Steve and now Peggy.
This place could make him go soft, domesticate him, or it could be the key to finding his lost humanity. He honestly didn't know. All he did know was it could be worse. He wasn't entirely certain he didn't deserve much worse. Romanoff likely would have argued with him on that point, but she was trying to justify her own salvation.
They all had their agendas.
At least he knew where and how the game was being played.
"I'm heading around to do the rest of the building. I'll try to be quick about it in case the noise was disturbing you."
He waved a farewell to her as he moved with the heavy pressure hose to the next side of the building to go back to his task. Simple work for a not-so-simple man.
