Steve tilted his head slightly, considering Bucky's words. It was entirely possible that there wouldn't be an end for them, that they'd be forced to live through lifetimes they were never meant to have. The one thing Steve could trust was that the serum Bucky had wasn't the same serum he'd gotten. If one of them was going to go first, as close to the natural order as it could be, it would be Bucky.
"There's always an end. Maybe we'll never grow old, but we'll make the most of the time we've got. Right thing to do, to make use of the time we've been given." That was the way Steve was wired, and not even seventy years on ice and a super soldier serum could change that about him. He fell into step next to the man who'd once been his other half, aching for the easy camaraderie they'd had for nearly all his life.
"It was a joke. Those aren't really my strong suit," Steve replied. "You were always the handsomest fella I ever knew. Your look's changed a bit, but you're still plenty handsome." He paused, glancing back toward the mall's entrance. "Figured I should get some more clothes. I need something to run in, at least, and getting out of the apartment was a good idea." It'd taken three days for him to burn through being annoyed and frustrated, feeling helpless. Turned out, the reason he was feeling so helpless was walking around the mall, trying not to attack anyone. Steve wished Sam had been taken with him, already missing the sensible advice the other man so often gave without being asked.
"I don't know what you're going through, Buck, so I'm not going to pretend like I do. Just don't go thinking you've got to deal with all of it on your own. I'm here. I can help. Just being able to admit to not wanting to hurt anyone is a big step." Steve let that hang in the air as they walked, a comfortable silence on his side of things. Just having Bucky next to him lifted a weight from his shoulders. There were plenty of other things weighing him down, but Steve was focusing on the positives. Bucky was here, safe, and he didn't want to hurt anyone. He figured it would be easier to walk in silence, to let Bucky make the next move, but even if it didn't happen on their walk, Steve was glad to at least have the peace of mind that came with knowing Bucky was in Test City and didn't appear to be under the influence of the Winter Soldier programming.
