"Do you hear guys going on about the cut of their suits or the right sort of boutonniere or the haircut they'll get before they go? No. Girls, can and do natter on about dance-related things for hours. It is, unfortunately for my ears, a proven fact. I have no interest in silk or taffeta or tulle, or any of the other trappings of formal dresses." Myer makes a dismissive wave.
Myer knows which girl Adam likes, would like to ask to the dance. Adam doesn't say much, but Myer is observant. Delilah is very pretty, and smart. All Myer would need to do would be to drop a word here or there, a gently-phrased suggestion, and Adam would have Delilah, or whomever else he'd want. It would be easy, but if Adam ever suspected, he'd be pissed, and rightfully so. So Myer keeps his mouth shut and lets Adam suffer in unrequited lust if he's not willing to man up and ask her himself.
Adam could have anyone; he's handsome and friendly and kind. Myer doesn't understand why Adam doesn't take advantage of his naturally-given gifts. He's very aware that if he were not who he is, he himself would not be dating someone like Jessica Byrnes; he's short, slim, girlish in looks. In a movie, he'd be cast as the gay friend of the female lead.
But life is not a chick-flick, and so Myer does use what advantages he can seize. It's foolish and wasteful, otherwise.
He gets out of the car. Adam never accepts invitations to come in, so Myer doesn't bother.
"She's only taking advantage of your ability to calculate moles," he returns with the same tone. "Don't get ideas, loser."
He closes the car door and steps back. It's nearly time for dinner, which means dealing with a squalling, bad-tempered Emmerson. Joy. But skipping it is out of the question; his father demands that they have dinner together as a family. There are worse things, but until Emmerson grows out of the Terrible Twos, he's not sure what they are.
Oh yes, he knows what's worse, what's far worse. After that, everything else is easy, and he can deal. He offers Adam a wave and then begins the hike up the long driveway.
