"My path has been hard," Priest said slowly, and he doubted Lot knew just how hard it had been. Hadn't he beaten himself bloody because there was no other way to suppress his urges, denied himself food because it interfered with his praying, gone without sleep to help those in need? The way of a holy man was hard in this debased world, and he supposed that now it was harder than it had ever been.
"But I find that the rewards God gives me in exchange for my humble service, whatever few gifts I have that please Him, are far greater than any material - or physical - reward I could receive. My kingdom will be in Heaven when I go to meet my maker. Where will your kingdom be, Lot?"
He sounded pious and he knew it, but he felt infused with the word of God trying to bring this lost soul back into the fold. If piety was a sin, then he was certainly guilty of it. "What are you willing to sacrifice to save yourself?"
