Ho`onani I Ka Makua Mau - Praise God from whom all blessing flow.
Kahea had been preparing this ceremony the whole month, collecting flowers to make leis for at least 20 people, with 5 to spare, and then flowers to spread in the water, found some good wood and asked someone to help her cut down some trees so she could try and make some surf boards. Kahea was lucky enough that someone from the Cano tribe helped her with the woodwork and she had 10 surfboards, people could double up if they liked or simply swim out with them and tread water or watch from the shore-line. A ceremony such as this wasn't meant to be big hoopla, but a small, intimate, near private occasion of close friends and family. It wasn't about death, it was about life, celebrating it, remembering it, so there was no need for black clothing on such a beautiful summer day.
Getting through her birthday with out Koa was hard, but she threw herself into her preparations, making her feel a bit better. She never went anywhere without Anela and she didn't sleep alone anymore, moving from Lou's to Stryde's to Swift to anyone's bed that would let her sleep with him/her for the night or a while. Some times she asked them to stay with her in her room. The new guy, the one Lou had saved, was quiet but it was nice when she found herself just sitting in the hallway reading, and he sat at his doorway also reading, just keeping each other company.
The surf boards would go to her tribe members first, and then anyone else wanting to come would those left or have to double up. Kahea hoped Savage would come, but she doubted the Chet would show up, him having an image to uphold and all. But she had left him a kukui nut lei hanging on his door very early that morning with a small note that simply said, "Mahalo for everything. -Kahea"
Kahea wore her bright orange one piece swimsuit with a green sarong around her hips, reaching her bare feet. She pulled her hair up in a ponytail and wore a pink flowered lei around her neck, as well as her other kukui nut lei she had. She had informed her fellow Tawas to not wear dark colors because this was a celebration of life, and afterwards she was hosting as much of a traditional Hawaiian luau as she could muster. She already had two wild sage grouses slow cooking in underground imus, and had caught some fish to make a version of Lomi Lomi Salmon and some sashimi, as well has fruits and vegtables. She planned this as much as she could, as much to memory as she could get it, and was thankful she had one Hawaiian cook book with her. It wouldn't be a 'perfect' ceremony that she would have if the world was 'normal' but it would be hers for Koa and something she could teach her fellow tribe members. Something she might be able to make their own for burials and such. Kahea didn't really know what effect this would have on her Hani family, but she was still going through with it.
Kahea sat on her board with Anela in front of her and poured the ashes into her hand and spread them into the water in the center of the surfboard circle. She repeated a Hawaiian prayer as she did this, her voice cracking just a hair as she went from the Hawaiian words to the English words. After her prayer was over and the ashes all in the water, Kahea took the flowers and flower petals she had and spread those into the water too. She paddled her way back into the circle and took off her own lei. She kissed it then tossed it into the center.
"At this time, you may choose to keep your lei or share it with the water. Then we can all paddle back to shore and back to Tawa territory where I have some food waiting for us. I thank you for coming. I love you all."
