The group had needed to be formed quickly, grouped according to skill sets rather than seniority when the information had reached the tribal leaders that more than one group were at large in Cascade Locks (after the Cano scouts had reported back following the first Leaders' meeting). It had been established that a clearing heavily covered from view held a decent size group of people, bound and gagged, and at least two people who were known from Cascade Locks and a couple of bodies had been identified.
After learning of Honey's abduction, Buck sent runners (on horseback for the tribes furthest from Oma) out to tell the leaders it was time to deal with the slavers.
Buck would have waited where the Oma, Tawa and Canos' territories met, for an hour, for those accompanying him on the rescue mission to arrive. His patience is strained and if it wasn't for the rational part of his brain (and Knight) he would have left already, on his own, to get Honey back. After the hour mark, Buck would have left with whoever was there within that time
