Ley Ley padded softly to the bathroom, her feet not feeling the cold tiles below through the double layer of thick wool socks she'd stolen from her brother. Grabbing at the knotted pull cord by the door the small room, big enough only for a single person shower tray, stand alone sink and stained toilet, was bathed in harsh white light that bounced off every surface to blind her. Clenching both her eyes shut in reflex to the impact of hot light she watched as neon splotches danced behind her lids. Once the blotches faded she squinted slowly allowing her pupils to adjust to pin pricks. The mirror that hung over the sink on rusty nails reflected her back faithfully, the only interruptions being the splash marks that dotted the bottom half. Carlos would be responsible for that, he was by far the messiest twin. Under the harsh glare of the bulb her skin looked pale and sallow as if she'd been without sun for decades and the whites of both her eyes looked dull but her iris' shone like polished wood. Grabbing her toothbrush from the floral pot, that had been dropped and chipped so many times neither of them dare take a swig from it lest they cut open their mouths, she began to brush her teeth. Bowing her head and spitting in the sink she noticed red swirls in the foam. Ley Ley frowned, the last thing she needed to worry about was loose teeth. Cupping and slurping water she sloshed it around her mouth but when she spit again the water ran clear. As she put the toothbrush back in the holder she felt a small drip on her cheek. Looking back in the mirror she spotted a small dark spot but when she wiped it away with her hand her fingers came back clean, no sign of the dark spot that had dare mar her complexion. About to turn around and slip back to bed Ley Ley stopped as she felt a second, heavier, drop slide down her cheek shortly followed by a third. She blinked, more drops slid down her cheeks. Red droplets began to colour the porcelain and when Ley Ley looked back at herself she could see red tracks trailing down her left cheek as her eye began to gush blood. Screeching she clamped a hand to her eye to stem the bleed and turned the tap on frantically trying to splash water on her eye so she could see. With her right eye she could see the sink was no longer red and when she touched her face her fingers came away clean. Taking a few calming breaths she opened her left eye and the blood gushed out so furiously that a terrible pushing pressure began to build up behind her eye and before she could stop it the eye exploded, painting the mirror in pink mist.
Ley Ley screamed and bolted upright in bed. Heart hammering for release against her chest she reached up and felt the worn leather of the eyepatch that shielded her disability. Legs itching with panic she swung out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom. When the light came on it was dim, almost yellow and she exhaled relieved to know she was no longer dreaming. Her eye felt funny, Topher had told her this would happen, that her body wouldn't quite register the loss and she'd feel movement in her left whenever she moved her right. Phantom limb or eyeball or whatever. In her dream she saw out of both eyes possibly because she remembered what that was like. Now the darkness that obscured her whole left side felt sort of animated, not still or dead but as if just half of her was standing in a lightless room. Tentatively Ley Ley lifted the eye patch and staring back at her was the gaping hole where her eye used to be. The skin inside had dried out and shrivelled and with a broken moan she gently touched the dried skin just beneath the desolate socket. Blood began too pour down her cheeks again but this time she could feel it on both sides of her face. With a horrified cry Ley Ley watched as her right eye bulged.
She awoke sweating and panting before her other eye had blown.
