Suddenly, everything was perfect. As stressful as the idea of having a baby was it was also perfect. Tay was excited and his worry for Vi’s wellbeing was finally fading. She was eating again and no longer plagued by terrible nausea. She was happy and less exhausted. Hell his finance was damn near glowing. Beyond just life in general now, the evening it had been perfect. It had been a while since the couple had really done a date night. After all it was really hard to do a date night when your date felt like she was going to throw up at any moment. With that all past they had gone out to dinner downtown. Tay couldn’t help the way he smiled as she ate, he just thankful she was eating, and the pronounced bump under her fitted dress sent pride through him. He was laughing as she begged to go to the ice-cream shop. In that moment, as she laughed and twirled in front of him, was pure perfect bliss.
And then it was shattered…
It broke apart like a delicate glass globe had been dropped on the pavement. Even with his shifter hearing and speed, Tay didn’t register the moving car before she did. Time seemed to freeze once his attention was on that speeding vehicle. Immediately he needed to assure himself that Vi was well out of the way. The car was moving directly at him which should have meant she was out of the way. Instinct told him to move to her but he fought it. If he did the car might swerve towards her too. Tay didn’t know why he seemed to know that the car was actively trying to hit him. And then, just like that time unfroze. He felt himself being pushed out of the way. The way he flew backwards meant there had to be magic involved. He heard the crash that mixed with the sounds of him hitting the ground
He knew what had happened before he could even recover from the daze of his hard landing. He just didn’t want to believe it. He turned to actually see… see the damage to the car, the broken windshield, the blood. It felt like slow motion as his eyes shifted to find Vi’s crumpled body. He couldn’t seem to move fast enough. It felt like he was fighting some force or he was outside himself in some way. He needed to get to her. He was screaming for her before he even knew it. An incoherent mix of her name and sounds. And then it happened again. It was like the slow motion broke and he was bolting at full speed to her side.
Any sense of logic was gone as he reached her. He knew he should move her too much but he wouldn’t have been able to stop himself even if he tried. He couldn’t see her face; he couldn’t tell if she was breathing. He needed to be able to do both. He turned her (though the some part of him was still careful in how he moved her) as the street seemed to come alive around them. Tay was barely aware of any of it. The car was gone and as much as Tay wanted to beat the driver to all hell he wouldn’t have been able to leave Vi to do so. Hell he could barely think. He didn't know which of the by standers had called for the ambulance. Whoever it was he was forever grateful. He knew it should have been him that was calling but his brain wouldn’t work that far. All he knew was that in what seemed like minutes the ambulance was there. They were there and they were taking Vi away from him. Not away for good. Logically he knew that. But still away.
It wasn’t until they got to the hospital that they really took her away, out of his sight away. And then time seemed to stop again. It was hours, it felt like longer. He discovered after they arrived that he didn’t have his cell phone. It must have fallen when Vi pushed him out of the way. The hospital said they were contacting people but he couldn’t comprehend that. All he could do was sit there and wait in his own fear. Finally they called her name and they lead Tay to a room. She would be in there shortly they said, after she had recovered some from surgery. They told him surgery had gone well, she would be alright and the momentary relief Tay felt from that was shattered fast. There had been nothing the doctors could do for the baby…
He was honestly a little grateful that Vi was still asleep when they wheeled her in to the room. She had woken once but there was still more to sleep off. It gave him much needed time to process and be able to be strong for vi when she woke
