Packing stuff was the worse part of going to boarding school. True, Adelaide rarely took all her things home with her for their barely a month long summer. She would be in the same room next year so there wasn't much point. SHE only took what was needed. It was still a chore though, even though she was finally reaching the end. She only had her closet to finish up. All her nicer clothes needed to come home because she really had no idea what she might end up doing this summer or what she might need. She pulled over a new box as she reached into the back of the closet. It was all the things she hadn't worn in a long time and she contemplated just getting rid of it all.
As she reached in again though she felt her heart jump to her throat. She didn't need to see the sweatshirt her fingers closed onto to know what it was. She knew the feel of the soft fabric and she most certainly knew the scent. Even after this whole time it still smelled like him as she drew it closer to her body. The soft fabric and its smell brought about a flood of memories. It was Fabian's sweatshirt and she could see remember how he had used it to protect her fancy shoes from getting dirty in a puddle on their first date. The so perfect first date. She smiled as she thought about it. It reminded her of memories of all the time she wore it when she was cold in his room. Of how it always smelled like him. Even now. There were no words to describe the feelings that raced through her as she held the sweatshirt to her face. It was incredible that such a simple item could bring up all the feeling of love and longing that she tried so hard to ignore. She missed Fabian more than she was ever willing to admit. Adelaide wasn't even aware of the fact that she was crying as she held his sweatshirt to her face. Burying the tears that were falling in the soft fabric. She knew she had to give it back to him, even though sh e really didn't want to. It was so symbolic of their relationship. It meant so much to her. But she had moved on, hadn't she? Her relationship with Reed was a good one. It was stable and it lacked the overwhelming passion that scared Adelaide so much.
She finally forced herself to move from the place she was seated on the floor. She folded Fabian's sweatshirt neatly on her bed before she turned to change out of her night clothes. It would just be cruel to go to her room wearing what she was.
A half hour later Adelaide was dressed and walking down the hallway towards Fabian's room. She held his sweatshirt against her chest. It had been so long since she had walked this hallway. She hand been to his room since they broke up and she found herself nervous as she knocked on his door. Her knock was lighter than she meant for it to be but she was nervous. Nearly every interaction between them went so badly. She was sure this would just be another. She waited quietly for his door to open, thinking about all the memories the sweatshirt in her arms brought to the surface.
