Kid sounded world-weary already. She could have been any of a dozen kids he knew back in Baltimore. He hoped to hell she didn't have more of a resemblance than that.
"Protecting your friend, right?" Amos nodded toward the lizard. "I think you did good." He could almost see Naomi smile at that, at him making what was probably the right call on it. "It was a kid that tried to get her to fight. I won't hit a kid. But I think you did good. Sometimes you gotta protect what's yours."
He nodded at the bench beside her. "Mind if I sit down?"
