Steve's eyes narrowed in confusion as the other man continued, feeling again that strange pull of familiarity that wouldn't be ignored. He blinked rapidly, staring... and then it happened.
For a brief second, they were somewhere else. The coffee shop was gone, they were in a sunny forest. Instead of the hum of patrons and hot foam machines there were explosions and shouting, shooting? It was so real Steve could taste the acidic air and feel the sweat and dirt that caked him. The man said his name again, and then suddenly turned to ash and disintegrated, failing off into the air without even falling over properly.
The flashing image was so real and intense, Steve let out a yelp and sprung backwards to avoid the smoke, nearly knocking over the man in a business suit standing in line behind him. The patrons around jumped and looked over, startled, and the man shoved Steve back slightly in irritation and his own surprise.
The blonde started again, looking around and seeing only the coffee shop, and the man was once again whole and standing there, staring at him. The color drained from Steve's face and he shook his head, back peddling rapidly and towards the door. "No. Uh, no, sorry. I'm late for work."
He burst back out through the door and started speed-walking towards his office building. That hadn't been the first flash to somewhere, something he'd never seen before, but it had been the most intense yet. It had nearly stopped his heart.
